I believe you have that fact a bit wrong, at least from what I remember hearing, it was Oda who made that claim to his editor trying to sell the idea of One Piece to him he was "willing to die for One Piece" to show his determination, which fits with how much effort Oda puts into this series.

Wow, I feel the Bon Clay love has been ignored. Man's literally saved Luffy's ass 3 times. 1 time from seriously dying. The first time he helped him escape in Alabasta which caused him to be held in Impel Down and that wasn't mentioned in that review. Then from dying by poison and then he sacrificed himself again so Luffy could go save Ace only to be captured.

For Luffy's philosophy, he chose the pirate live. So he acknowledge there no fair and unfair for people who chose this path. But if civilian became the victims of pirates, then he will protect that person. If you noticed luffy will plunder another pirate's wealth every time. So the conclusion is he is chaotic to the people who chose the pirate life but hate it when civilians or normal people affected by it.

Seeing his vivre card burning at first doesn't make luffy just want to go save him, because he knows ace chose the pirates life. The main issue is that luffy has yet to see a true negative consequence of his actions. Information is a lot harder to gather in the one piece world, and most of the time the results he does see come from his actions are always positive. He doesn't care about the long term effects of his actions when he needs help NOW, and he isn't the type to get hung up on "what could I have done" when there is nothing he could have done. But he has shown to at least consider the long term consequences of what he does, so we truly dont know how he would react if say, crocodile destroyed syrup village because luffy freed him.

His team: so, a wanna be Pirate King, a powerful Ninja type killer, a thief, a perv, a lier, a monster, a murdering Cyborg who does like to build heavy weapons, an assassin, etc... You can read One Piece totally differently. Newbie here, but this could be a (rather sad) take on the overall story. Could be such a 18o at the very end. I'd bet on such an issue. (That and reincarnation of Roger in Luffy, so, so heavily foreshadowed from the earliest arcs).

One interesting thing here when it comes to allying with previous enemies is that I think it highlights Luffy's ability for the Past to be left in the Past. Crocodile was an ass. Luffy beat the crap out of him. Scales are now balanced. Running into him again now, that score has been settled, and Luffy doesn't hold grudges, so he Judges Croc on his actions in the here and now, and if he's willing to help, so be it. We've seen this already twice with Franky and Robin joining the crew: the ultimate show of trust, even though they actively hurt the current crew at the time when they first met them as villains. I have further thoughts as why this is the case, but that's deep into spoiler/theory territory, so I''ll leave it at that for now :3

Don't count on arcs getting shorter from here. Just PLEASE DON'T compromise on the substance to shorten the length of future reviews. There's going to be A LOT of substance packed in future arcs, especially once you start seeing the interconnected and heavily foreshadowed nature of One Piece.

His natural leader ability of getting people on his side through just being himself and circumstances that makes them work with him. You believe in him after defying great odds almost dying he can make miracles happen! Great set up for next arc feeling that way going into it.

Man I did the maths the other day, and I've been following one piece for like 15+ years since I was a kid... I remember this was the arc that made me go back and actually start looking at the lore I had missed as a child. It's been so much ridiculous fun seeing you go through the story and vicariously get to "see it" again for the "first time" :') It makes me so happy you're so into the story!!

Love your theory and I'm glad you enjoyed Impel Down so much. Jinbei and Bon Kurei (which is just a romanization of Bon Clay btw) were the MVPs for this arc. Between Bon-chan's crusade for the sake of FRIENDSHIP and Jinbei not only keeping Luffy's head in the game, but also being 50% of the reason they were even able to escape. Also, one of my favorite and less talked about puns from the arc was the Sphinx and his noodle (men) obsession; especially when he broke the floor and said "Gomen" aka "Sorry" in Japanese.

4Kids being a company wanting to make squeaky clean content made One Piece being foisted upon them a big mistake on all parties, though this doesn't absolve their bad business practice from the start. It was awful to go far beyond standard 'localization' in favor of gross "Americanization'. I'll never forgive them for marring the career of David Moo so thoroughly with how they directed Sanji, David Moo is a fantastic actor.
