So fun little trivia about the silk in the Aegean Islands. It's not actually silk, but a product called sea silk, or byssus. There are clams in the eastern Mediterranean called pen shells, and they attach themselves to rocks using these silklike filaments. The ancient Greeks realized that, if you harvested the shells, you could make cloth out of the filaments, which was very strong, very light, and, if treated with lemon juice, turned a golden color that didn't fade. IT was rare and precious, and even small amounts were remarkably expensive. It's not harvested anymore, but it was up until the beginning of the 20th century. The clams are almost extinct, and pretty much everyone who knew how to prepare it has died.

He's getting into the little details, spotting troublesome political entanglements as well as brief moments of weakness to act on. It's all very uncharacteristically observant. A war with Macedonia is inevitable and it's going to be a War of Attrition. The control of the Aegeans and the Straits of Patras should be where you need to fight. 4:50 - This is the same issue I'm having with EU4. Some countries get really boring during peace time because there's a significant lack of politics and it's largely just waiting for numbers to tick up. I think the issue that both of these games have is that you aren't *as* involved in the management of the country as you are in CK2 or Stellaris. In CK2 if you aren't at war, you're always dealing with internal realm politics which can get quite complicated. In Stellaris when you aren't at war you're either managing your fleets, managing colonies, or managing your economy. Both EU4 an Imperator would be better games if they significantly reduced the importance of monarch points (maybe just limit their use to tech and some military actions) and made the existing systems much deeper and more interactive rather than 'spend X amount of points to do Y'. For foreign trade routes, you should have to properly negotiate, for example, and improving stability should be something you actually have to genuinely work towards rather than hitting the button once you have enough points to stab a pig.

I don't really like how the war score works here, I honestly prefer how Crusader Kings II does it, if you fight an allied kingdom, you can't get their land, you just get the land that you basically had a claim on. It's kind of silly that an ally would give up territory for a fight that didn't really affect their lands because you kinda don't have any claims on Sparta, so you should not be able to take the location just because you took it from a war in which they joined as a ally. It also allows for a slower plan and more actual tactics on how you conquer an area.
@MercuryManProduction5 жыл бұрын
"It's kind of silly that an ally would give up territory for a fight that didn't really affect their lands" Except that isn't what happened here. He took Crete, and he also took mainland Sparta, but only after sending in an army and taking the cities by force. It wouldn't have made sense if he couldn't take Sparta, because how the hell were they going to stop him? Whats silly is that, in games like CK2, I can declare war on someone, defeat their entire army, siege their capital, take the leader and their family captive, and then only take the one county I have a claim on. Why? I own them, there is literally nothing they can do to stop me. Its silly that I can't just demand to take the land I've already conquered. What are they going to do, say no? Its already mine. Sure, maybe the Pope or some other neighboring powers might object, but if they can't stop me either, why would I listen to them? That is exactly how wars worked, especially during the Roman era. There wasn't some magic rule that said you had to declare your intentions before declaring war, and stopping you from doing literally anything other than what you have a claim to do. And there was definitely no rule that said you were only allowed to conquer the people you had claims on. If they had friends, and those friends decided to fight you, they were now just another enemy in the war. If you defeat someones army, and march men into their cities, you get to decide what to do with them, regardless of why they got involved in the first place. If somebody comes up to you and says "excuse me sir, but you aren't allowed to conquer us, because we were just honoring an alliance. You've torn down our walls, killed all our fighting men, executed our generals and nobility, and your soldiers are eating in our great hall, but now you all have to leave, because you don't have a good claim on this land" you'd either execute him, put him in a cell, or just laugh in his face. Hell, claims weren't even really a thing back then. When Rome took Carthage, they didn't hire a guy to come up with fake reasons why Rome should really be in charge of each individual part of Carthage, and then take those parts one by one. They declared war because some Italian mercenaries in Sicily asked Rome for help fighting off the Carthaginians. A few decades and 3 wars later, Rome beat Carthage, and then they took control of basically all the territory Carthage had. Not because they had a claim on that land, but because they were in charge and there was nobody left to tell them no. In games like CK2, its not such a big deal, because CK2 is about a lot more than just war. Its about politics, and life at court, and ensuring a good future for your family and your descendants, and managing your realm. The wars are really unrealistic, but they aren't the main focus of the game, so thats okay. In its current state, Imperator Rome is 100% a map painter. There is almost zero city management, population management, or politics. The characters are all one-dimensional and interchangeable. They don't have personalities, just numbers, and unless one of them achieves something really impressive, you don't even remember their names once they're gone. Imperator Rome is a war game. Adding rules to make warfare slower, more complicated, and less realistic would only serve to slow the game down.
