Hi. What laptop would you recommend for chemistry students at imperial?

Hi hope your second year went well! Can you give me some advice on how to find an internship over summer? I just finished first year! Thanks!!
@chemicalstudies4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Hope your first year went well too :) Haha unfortunately I haven't been able to get any actual summer internships - but check out the Internship Experience UK by Bright Network for some virtual ones since they have no maximum number of interns they can accept XD Other than that, I need advice on how to find an internship over summer too lmao. Good luck!

Did you also get into Oxford for Chemistry and was it hard to choose Imperial over Oxford?

Thanks for the content! How was your personal statement structured? I am applying to imperial next year so i could use some advice :)
@chemicalstudies4 жыл бұрын
No problem! I'm going to do a personal statement video next week or the week after, so I'll address that then :) but in the mean time, I would suggest doing an online course on something not taught at school to show your passion for the subject you're going to apply for~

i got my confirmed offer to study at imperial this october however now i am starting to have second doubts my gut is saying go to ucl as there optional module suit my interest a lot more however i fear if i reapply for ucl again i may not get in as the competition this year is high. i've realised i am neither interested in maths and physics module nor medicinal chem. i would prefer m&p since i love maths but i cant stand physics. also i fear the competitive environment is going to mess with my mental health. but i would feel bad for rejecting a high class uni. should i just accept the course and try out for first year? no other unis in clearing appeal to me

If your gut feeling is to go to ucl then I would honestly say trust your instincts, as long as you think your gut feeling is based on what you truly know of the university and not what you think that uni will be like based on online data from a third party / other people's experiences. I'm sating this because a few things you mentioned are things I often hear people assume just because Imperial is a higher ranked university - Chemistry at Imperial isn't competitive at all once you get in, unless you choose friends who like to compete against each other when you are here. We have a cohort averaging around 150 students, which would be much smaller than that of UCL - so you'll actually end up with more pastoral support due to a much smaller student:staff ratio. Also, bear in mind at university you're the one in control of your mental health - if you're struggling, you need to reach out yourself, unlike school no one is going to notice because of the reduced contact hours and increased hours of independent study. So in my (biased) opinion if you're worried about mental health, it's better to attend a smaller uni than a larger one since there's a more intimate student-staff relationship - wherever you end up studying, the workload for Chemistry will definitely be a lot more than in school so you'll probably be stressed anywhere you end up in ngl lol. But ok cons for Imperial: there's quite a large chunk of computer programming labs starting from 1st year vs non-existent in UCL unless you choose that option, definitely going to have more free time as a UCL Fresher, UCL has a lot more of both private and university student accommodation options which are walking distance from uni, less practical labs in general at UCL (so maybe better if you don't like doing experiments that much and are studying Chemistry because you like the theory + want to use the degree's transferrable skills to pursue a non-research related career). Best of luck with making your decision and I hope you have a good uni experience wherever you end up choosing to study.

Hey how much maths is in the chemistry course apart from of course the mpc module. Also did you continue to do mpc module in year 2 ? How hard is the module in general ? I enjoy maths a lot but I have to make decision between mpc course or language as I was thinking of going abroad. Would some of the mpc content be covered in the normal chemistry module ?

I applied through the UCAS website with my A Level and GCSE grades, but you can apply using your dse grades too. For information on how UCAS works if you've never heard of it just google their website. And no probs :)

Which books do you follow at college for maths for chemists
@chemicalstudies4 жыл бұрын
We had a book which covered things from school, but there was no university textbook for our course because the lecturer decides how much depth you go into the subject, and they had no textbook which went into the right amount of detail so there was no reading material for lectures.

Need more vlogs in chemistry lab more plzzzz
@chemicalstudies4 жыл бұрын
Due to health and safety, I'm not allowed to video things when I myself am handling chemicals, so I'm afraid there's not much of labs that I am allowed to video lol.

Would you recommend getting textbooks or coursebooks before uni? or is it possible to get them from seniors at Imperial?
@chemicalstudies4 жыл бұрын
No I wouldn't recommend getting them beforehand - Imperial has an online library where you can access almost all of them for free, and often what is recommended the year before is not recommended the year after due to a change in course or lecturer. Yes, seniors at Imperial usually have second-hand book sales in week 1 or 2.
