Varangian guard are extremely weak for what they do yes. They cost 90 food (so *0.9 of the cost of standard MAA) but 40 gold (so *2 the cost of standard MAA). Already there you have a problem, but in addition they are not sufficiently powerful for that cost. Castle Age Varangian with 140 HP and slower attack speed is basically eating shit against all "special" MAA in terms of usefulness.

Btw the Golden Horn Tower can also spawn mercenary units from the trade post, if you put a Mercenary House next to it. Hopefully they let you select what it will spawn in a future update though...

It'd be fun but I think it'd be too strong and open up all kinds of wild builds for the Byzantines if you could pick what it spawns, especially because the units you can get from trade posts are basically a list of the most cracked units in the game. You really have to think about what merc contract you want to pick if you're going for the Golden Horn Tower with how it works now. I think Western mercs are not great against Joan, especially if you take the Hippodrome, the Hippodrome locks you into making horsemen and you'll get longbows from your merc house...horseman/longbow is a good comp against a lot of things but not royal knights. And landsknechts are good against the kind of tightly packed infantry formations you'll pretty much never see out of a French player. With a Hippodrome opening vs Joan I like the Eastern contract better instead and Cistern of the First Hill instead of GHT...you want the option to make Ghulams if the Joan player switches to mass spears but you don't necessarily want to have them get randomly produced by a GHT, and I think the endgame of the Hippodrome is trying to max out with a lot of cataphracts, one of the most pop-efficient units in the game, and the pilgrim flask is a major benefit when using cataphracts.

I don't know man, but with the Byzantines already having low popularity and still being discovered amongst the players. Taking away a nice upgrade as a "gentleman aggreement" while letting the Jeannie do literally magic out of thin air seems very balanced to me and i would rather not play against the civilization atleast competitive.

Take away her ability to train royal knights and replace them with Jeans riders. A civ with best unit for feudal pressure gets a hero. Never seen a Jean lose a feudal fight ever

I think the horseman open was good against either form of Joan, although one is mainly used. What's difficult is how much of your army should counter her or her army? It feels like it's forcing you to move into a tri-composition. Horseman against her or Archer Spearmen against Royal Knight Archer against Spearman Early Knight against her Also, Byzantines should use stone walls when pushing aggressive cistern placement. Can help in ranged fights.

The problem with Johanna von Orleans ;) that is obvious here, is also present in most games when she is not facing a civ with good early game pressure. She really is too strong against many civs right now, just for being easier to level up against them.

Lmao why is everyone hating on the Greek fire projectiles. Clearly it’s not a bug, but a feature. Most games finish in feudal or castle, so it’s not as if it’s likely, so they should just embrace it as it is.

I don't play this game competitively at all, just with friends in co-op, but I _love_ playing as Jeanne. I like using her abilities, and it feels like I can have some control over each fight instead of just watching the units fight automatically

You would probably want to get berries first, they get more oil. But oil is not used until age II, so it is not necessary to prioritize straight food gathering.

Byzantines should have early maa and cataphracts (a heavily nerfed version of it though). Cataphracts shouldn't be able to beat knights in castle on the other hand.

I dont think you can say ones overpowered and ones underpowered quite yet. Ones just easy to play and tough to deal with, while the other one just needs some time to learn better. Imo byz is a brand new civ that has a ton of stuff and strats you can do while jdark is a french spin off basically so more people know how to use her faster. Give it some time first :)

I don't have a PhD however I feel like if Crackedy had put up stone walls in place of palisade walls then he might have been able to throw off Jeanne d'Arc's tempo enough to give him a better chance in the later parts of the game.

Havent watched the whole vid but if its in feudal then there is an unspoken "no stone walls in feudal" rule with pros

@@Darksiege357 it's not unspoken, that's a tournament rule, and it's stupid. If Relic put it in the game it's in the game, if it will turn your tournament into a cheesefest (which it almost certainly wouldn't now with the changes to walls since the launch of the game) then let it happen until the devs are forced to fix it. Also IMO a lot of tournament players don't think to build stone walls in age III when they really should most of the time because they're used to not walling because of that rule. We'd have a vastly different meta if people regularly used stone walls in feudal. I think Byzantine and OotD in particular are underperforming in part because of this.

Byzantines need some buff, they are pretty weak. Make the strong walls stronger and cheaper and buff a bit something else.

So why's the greek fire projectiles banned? Surely a ~30% net buff for trebs on buildings that doesn't even stack if more than one treb used is not OP. In imperial not even close to a bombard. For units, it's even worse as only does 2 damage a second form fire, so you're not getting anything near even a mangonel with this for use on units, even if the treb manages to hit and the units stand there for 13 seconds. The extra 10% base damage over geometry (which already competes with siege towers for worst thing in the game) is worth a whopping 4 damage, on 12.5s rate of fire. Nothing about it, especially being on the worst civ, screams ban this. Exploit or bug with it?

Jeanned'arc is no problem if if being countered by ottoman. Chinese can countered it if only pyrotechnique tech return to the real valued. 20% more range and damage for all gun powdered units. There Chinese nest of bees might able to kill it as well as the bombard

I am really hoping byz get a hand flame thrower unit at some point. Ideally (for me) they remake the imo academy landmark so that they can only get flame throwers from that lm so theres a reason to not always go foreign engineering.

my suggestions to nerf Jeanne d'Arc : - Make Jeanne levels scale with ages - Reduce her range dmg reduction from 50/65 to 25/40 - Slightly increase her abilities cooldown Having a blast with the Byzantines, really dope unique units and faction design. I feel like they will benefit from an Olive Grove reduction cost. It would make the first landmark more viable, and overall better farm transition and better mid-game. Also call the ressource "oil", I can't get how I can squeeze olive oil out of berries and fishes...

The vowel sound in "Jeanne" is just "a", not "ea" nor "oa". If you want to improve your pronunciation, think of "Jeanne" as a single syllable: "Jan" (short "a" and short/medium "n")

Drongo, The correct way of pronouncing Jeanne is not like John. forget the e and try to pronounce the a the same way it is pronounced in all latin languages. That's the correct way. The same a you have at the end of Maria for example. Edit : Of course Joan is fine as well, we get who you are referring to :)

Jeanne isn't too powerful. Crackedy made too many mistakes once the Jeanne player got to Imperial. But I'm guessing the developers will listen to the complaints and nerf Jeanne. Then the civ will be turned into a weaker civ than it already is.
