I was stationed on DS-1 for a brief period before she went operational. My quarters were similar, but I always had my bed made to Imperial specifications. The Empire provides. I was detailed to a recovery team trying to get back some stolen data. I was gone when she was blown up by Rebel Scum. I lost my entire Sabacc card collection. All in all, I was lucky.

I’ve been working directly with Vader as a Admiral for as long as I can remember. These noises have always been comforting to me. The soft chirps and whirs of droids is always nice, though I can always tell when it’s Vader doing a patrol sweep from his breathing. He needs to find a way to make that apparatus quieter. (Don’t tell him I said that.)

Always nice to come home to a freshly made bed and the reassuring hum of an ISD after a long system patrol in a noisy TIE.

I can attest that this was home. I was a network tech on the DS-1. I had to report to Coruscant for a reassignment right before the DS-1 left the remnants of the Alderaan system. I thought being reassigned to a Gozanti class ship due to percieved lack of performance was bad. I got off lucky and I must have impressed command enough to be later reassigned to Lord Vader's flagship the Executor enroute to Endor.

Part 3 Finale "Which was my next point, topographical holos needs to be a requirement for all platoon units, I recommended this in my report. How we succeeded is by directly understanding the composition of the hills west of the highway and thus we discovered the method by which the enemy was retreating so quickly." "Which was what exactly." "The soil in the hills is fairly soft and easy to build tunnels through, previous units tried destroying these tunnels during combat to restrict and reduce enemy flank attacks as they moved forward, the issue being the plains area was heavily mined and would be re-mined after and during all Imperial operations. Most casualties were a result of mines over small arms fire. Essentially our own troopers were cut down before they even reached the ambush lines that the Dresselians had fortified. Which allowed them to greater reinforce their defenses.....the fact is sir, I deployed a scout platoon several hours ahead of operations further west of the hills. I had them quietly scour those hills for any enemy encampments or staging grounds. The results were staggering." "I assume the larger contingent of their forces was there?" "At least they estimated 2 Companies at most, the river on the otherside of those hills is surrounded by thick forest, which explains why the TIE scouts from previous operations never spotted anyone, the scout platoon itself was deployed at least 5 klicks due west of the river and entered the forest, silently disabling sensors and sabotaging weapon caches. The Scout platoon also attached a Flamtehrower squad that enveloped the forest in fire. This created the distraction necessary that allowed our AT-ST platoon and paired engineer squads south on the plains to disarm the necessary traps and mines at ease." "How did they manage that?" "Light discipline, the Engineers scan for mines, and proceed with caution and the AT-ST's advance with them as guides following exactly in the enginerr's path." "That sounds awfully slow and ineffective, even for a nighttime operation." "The objective wasn't to disarm all the mines, but to create a path large enough to push our vehicles through, because I realized why the last battlegroup kept losing. There were underground tunnels placed at intermittent points in the minefield, because the Dresselians knew Imperial tactics previously would clear the mines for them. There were unturned holes in the plains where their forces would appear and flank our forces. I used Imperial probe droids to scan the plains hours ahead to work out where and which areas to leave mined based on the topographical scans of these tunnels entrances in the ground by the droids." "Using their own weapons against them." "Exactly. So based on the scans I formed a tactical route to allow our mixed AT-ST platoon along with one of my own infantry platoons to proceed far enough back to eliminate any reinforcements via the tunnels by sending them inside once the enemy had cleared the mine perimeter around them." "I did read your report Captain." "I know sir, but my point being the refinement of tactics has to adapt to changing circumstances. We won because I utilized my units best suited. The Scout Platoon and Flamerthrower squads presented an perfect distraction and destruction of their reserves and allowed my infantry to scour and cut off the tunnels at minimal to no casualties. I know the Lieutenant Colonel isn't happy about my change to protocol, but Kunac City proved that even I need to learn more and be more flexible in my operations." "That's just it isn't it, I honestly don't think the Command really understands how we win these types of conflicts and unfortunately I am here to make you correct your advised tactical recommendations in your report, not because they don't make sense, but because it makes Lieutenant Colonel Jaxo look bad." *Captain Boshek, renders a sigh of frustration mixed with sorrow.* "So we dismiss what could save lives, to save one man's ego." "On record yes, but I do know a place where I think your talents could be better utilized which was actually addressed by the Lieutenant Colonel himself." "Imperial Center?" "Haha no, you would be wasted there. Tell me though have you heard of Captain Dagon Niriz?" "No sir, I am afraid I haven't." "I thought not, he serves aboard the Admonitor as acting commanding officer." "I don't understand what a possible use I could be on Naval Vessel?" "Boshek, your talents are wasted here where you will merely be at the mercy of ego and tactical obfuscation, but I know someone who would have use of officers who see the larger picture." "Sir I failed my company at Kunac," "You didn't defeat the enemy as you did along the Highway no, but you adjusted and your tactics saved lives and you inspired and kept your troops focused and open to new ideas on the battlefield and you respect their experience, someone who Senior Captain Thrawn is looking for." "The Alien? Sir, I thought Captain Niriz was commanding-" "Merely a formality Captain Boshek, I think you will find Senior Captain Thrawn will greatly appreciate your level of thinking much more then you realize."

Part 1 *a chime sounds at the door while Captain Hav Boshek cycles through his datapad in exhaustion overlooking his after action reports 24 cycles earlier, he brushes the cut still fresh above his right eye, inspecting as he shuts the datapad off, before sweeping up off his bed as the ringing continues. The entrances door slides away to revealing a stern Major Ilesh Porav, hands firmly clasped behind his back, and his dark eyes staring daggers into Hav's only to expand in a friendly smile at the sight of Captain Boshek's colorless face as he chuckles at Boshek nervously paralyzed* "Major Porav, sir! I was not expecting you at this hour." "No, I didn't expect that you did Captain Boshek, I was wondering if you had a moment of time to talk? I wanted to discuss some details regarding the operations in northern Breehara?" "Of course, sir I was just...just going over them myself." *The Major enters and Boshek notices his wandering eyes at his disheveled quarters, the stench of perfumed alcohol sits in the air, along with an open bottles, messes of flimsliplast papers on the Captain's desk as Hav anxiously cleans up his bed offering the Major a seat.* "My apologies if this a bad time Hav," "No, sir, a good officer keeps his quarters in order, I just have been busy trying to sort things out with our future operations. Can I offer you some Caf sir?" *The Major smiles politely and nods as Captain frantically disappears into the rear of his quarters, talking aloud as the Major peers around the corner from his seat, assured of his Captain's attention in the other room before he rises quietly and walks over to the desk his hands glance at the words on the various flimsliplast sheets smudged with stains of spilled alcohol. He makes out a letter to a husband and another to a mother. The intensity of Boshek's voice grows louder as Porav pretends to examine the half empty bottle of local Dresselian Wine as Boshek awaits behind him diverting the conversation* "I...oh I am sorry sir, I can assure you I am off duty and the vintage was a gift from another officer I-" *Porav inspects the bottle in his hands turning around as Boshek, two cups of caf in both hands blinks.* "Under the circumstances Captain, I can understand if you did. You aren't the first nor the last of his Emperor's Army to indulge, though I can see it on your face, its a weight you carry." *Major Porav lays the bottle on the desk accepting the caf returning to his seat while Boshek shuffles the loose flimsi into a neat stack on his desk, removing the Dresselian Wine and the half empty glass accompanying it, tucking it in side a nearby wall cubby. He sits and sighs his eyes on the floor briefly, hunched over.* "Yes sir, the occupation here, honestly our Operations yesterday, I don't feel quite right about what happened." "I know, its probably no surprise to you that Lieutenant Colonel Jaxo, isn't very pleased with your after action report, or your recommendations regarding the operation." "With all frankness sir, I question our ability to deal with these Dresselian guerillas. Imperial tactics are based on overwhelming numbers and firepower in terms of ground operations and while functioning intimidation works great on Coruscant or any of the Core worlds, out here, well our tactics are in need of revision." "I agree, casualty reports in the last year since our occupation are going under the Sector Moff's nose because of the value of our mining operations here. Political maneuvering and pandering is resulting in operational oversight and a logistical nightmare. However, the operation conducted by your company yesterday in the north end of the Breehara province has arose several problems." "Sir, I know I didn't cut off the Dresselians in the northeastern end of the city, but we weren't allowed proper reconnaissance in the first place. We need to know what our troops are walking into before we can seal off any attempts at an exit to crush these forces. I can't rely on AT-AT support for operations such as this either. Early morning operations need speed and properly artillery support, not a vehicle of intimidation. Especially regarding nighttime operations. Speederbikes and Repulsortanks would have suitably rectified our operation in Kunac City if I was given a proper scout and vehicle platoons attached to this operation. The casualties inflicted alone would have been greatly reduced and-" "I know Captain, I can see you are personally attending to that," *Major Porav nods at the stacked flimsi's.* "The Empire is quite capable of handling the more dour aspects." "I feel obliged to do so sir. I am the reason their sons and daughters are dead. Is an impersonal letter of condolence scripted by a droid really a way to honour their sacrifice.? I want the citizens back home to know I knew them. Its just hard when some of them I barely got to know from those who died last month or the month before that. How much are the lives of us really worth out here, when I can barely recall them now?" "Ours is a thankless service Hav, and I sometimes wonder myself if our officers coming from the Core are little more then opportunistic runts, but places like this seed out the spineless and showcase the true markers of good leadership and you are a good Captain to those men and women, Hav, you wouldn't be beating yourself up if you weren't. The fact of the matter is, the Clone Wars framed a lot of tactics that were meantfor standing armies and siege warfare. The Dresselians are operating inside populated centers and areas under our occupation with support from local citizenry which makes our tactics from the Academy essentially rendered ineffective, but not obsolete. I noted in your report that the night before you were doing sweeping operations in the P'daina Highway Green Zones with AT-ST's Platoon upfront paired with Engineering Squads combing the surface."

Part 2 "Yes sir, I had been relayed by Captain Masilis' that the Dresselians were laying ambushes along the north- western plains near the highway. Most small arms and anti-vehicle weaponry, but when the last battlegroup was rotated out before our arrival, they failed to notify us of their presence. It would seem because of the proximity to the Highway that orbital strikes were tactically out of the question, so I configured a operation based on the reports I was able to access on the Corps action reports on file." "That's quite an initiative Captain." "I know it takes time to get access to those reports, but I knew we would be deployed to secure Kunac City down the line. I just tried to not repeat the mistakes of the battlegroup before us." "Which were? Please speak freely." "In all honesty sir, Academy Order of Operations aren't suitable if the enemy knows are tactics. They rely on deception , so we in turn need to also, it just so happened to work in this case. The Dresselians operate and intiate combat at ranges between 50 to 100 meters, its how they develop the element of surprise. Against infantry its a suitable effective tactic, especially an infantry ill equipped and frankly sir poorly led. I have read enough officer reports to know that the Imperial protocol surrounding our command is to essentially lead not by example and our Army needs a more effective class of Non-coms. The barrier between enlisted and officer is very far apart and while our Lieutenants are meant to lead on the battlefield, reports say different, which leads to my next problem that can be remedied by this solution. NCO's form a base of field experience and tactical know how that is invaluable to the enlisted on the field. Veteran Sergeants I have communicated with, have more an idea of the needs of the men, logistics and smaller unit effectiveness with that experience. Officers serve a command purpose, but without proper NCO's to pull the platoon, once an officer is down then the platoon is essentially helpless. I understand the Sergeant-Majors are meant to fill that role, but one per platoon is not enough. The reason I bring this up is one thing we do have is unit flexibility. We can mix and combine multiple different platoons into an effective fighting force. It just needs to be realized by Command." "Where are going with this Captain?" "My point being sir, the Dresselian guerilla positions we wiped out was due to deception and mixed unit tactics. The last battlegroup overwhelmed their positions on the plains in force only to be reoccupied again and again because their was no proper reconnaissance and no units positioned west of the plains to cut off their escape. They would lead with waves of infantry with minimal vehicle and spotty artillery support and because the battlefield was too far away to establish control long enough for Imperial reinforcements to arrive, the Dresselisns would counter attack from the hills out west, with theirs, thus the operations always failed." "I can understand that, the biggest flaw with our tactics here has been the enemies knowledge of the terrain greatly exceeds ours."
