Why do we need this customized List when we have got an inbuilt linked list in the util package. Could you please advise?

To become a good programmer you should know how to build a list by yourself. We already have code for almost everything now. That shouldn't prevent us from learning about that. This will help us in solving other complex problems.

Why should we declare next reference for Node class? Is the next reference is inbuilt?

You are building a list. list is made of items that we call node. Each item holds data. But how do you know where the next item is? so we add a reference variable in each node to store where the next item is. It is not inbuilt, we are creating the class.
