The release of poorly treated wastewater into natural resources impacts on human health and the natural environment. According to the Green Drop Report 2012, several wastewater treatment works in the Limpopo Province are in high and critical risk positions. In an attempt to address this challenge, CSIR researchers are developing an algae-based wastewater treatment system to improve the operational efficiency of the pond-based wastewater works in the province's Motetema District Municipality.
