Fear of Covid!! My parents will go to functions etc where there are big crowds but won't go back to Sunday Mass. I asked them why but they look at me blankly. Our priest here in the West in the last few weeks is encouraging us to invite fallen family members to Mass, also he invited them to confession so that they will be "in a state of grace" to receive Jesus on Christmas morning. No one walked out. He's not usually this brave. I myself when I started searching for the faith after 20 years nearly died when a woman told me it is mortal sin not to go to Mass. I needed to hear this, thank God for that woman. I wasn't long about returning to Mass and the Sacraments. We love our priests, you may be surprised at what you can say, esp when it's the truth. 🙏

I believe that priest should be telling about importance of attending mass in the church. Some people lack basic formation because priests are afraid to speak up. Priest has the authority to speak up about commandments and state of grace and sin. I strongly believe that. Cowardice has no place in this " heavenly business" 😊

I suffer from anxiety and going to a venue with lots of people was/is always challenging. I used to go to mid-week Mass because there were only half a dozen people and I could cope with that. BUT... after having gone to confession so many times for missing Sunday Mass I was advised to pray on it. I began to see the good side (no doubt through Christ's intervention!) and amazingly, I don't feel nearly so anxious. I still tuck myself up at the back and rarely talk to anyone but I'm there!

Great talk Father and I admire your candor. As a father of two young adult boys, I can convince them to come with me to attend the mass in latin which is about one and a half hour away...THEY see the reverence. When I attend the local parish mass, which is the new mass, about 15 minutes away, I can't get them to come because they find it too silly...even if they're aware it's a sin. It's too effeminate for them.
@christopher4192 Жыл бұрын
This kind of reaction was predicted by some bishops decades ago when changes to the Mass were in early stages of discussion. I have recently had an opportunity to attend a local parish church, and I think there's more to the problem than effeminacy alone, although that is an important criticism. Most readers are women, and in most cases their voices are too high-pitched and soft to be heard clearly - at least by any men in the congregation. The clutter by the altar of small schoolgirls dressed like angels in a Christmas play is distracting and wholly unnecessary. But there are other problems as well. Every Mass that I have seen is wrecked by attempts at congregational singing that in the church I observed was always unaccompanied. Even where the congregation was familiar with a particular chant (e.g., for the Creed) the mixture of banal English translation with plainchant sounds incongruous. The priest leading the congregation seemed determined to sing almost everything in sight. He didn't appreciate that while prayers that are clearly read can be easy to follow, a prayer that is sung is not. Hymns at Mass (the 'hymn sandwich') are a distraction. If I wanted to engage in community singing I would go to the methodist church nearby. And then there are sermons. In my experience these had rarely been thought through beforehand. If they had, they would have been shorter. There are few priests, however experienced, who can handle a stream of consciousness successfully. Add to all that the sometimes top-heavy readings from the Old Testament and the dreary congregational repetitions in the space belonging to the former Gradual and Alleluia, and finally, not least, the irreverent way in which communion is administered and received, and I do not wonder at your sons' reactions.

Thank you, Father!! It has greatly annoyed me how folk my age even older than myself don't bother going to mass. Me, I try my best to go, but I have various health issues that may sometimes stop me from doing so, and although I have no way of stopping my health from giving me problems and stopping me from leaving my house I feel guilty. I go through back spasms, which make it hard for me to walk or stand and are excruciatingly sore. When I'm ok and able to walk no problem I go to mass. I've sometimes even gone into the spasms half way through mass but I will happily sit on. But what annoys me is when I go to mass I never see people my age or a little older with their children. If anything it's mainly elderly folk that I'd see. This is beyond wrong, they should be teaching their children the Catholic religion through faith and going to mass, not by just going through school masses or special occasions (Christmas, Easter, wedding's etc.) They should teach their children of where our Lord is withing the chapel, why we're supposed to go to chapel and mostly how to behave in the house of God. I don't have children atm, but I have 5 nephews, and sadly the only time their parents (my siblings) bring their children to mass is Christmas, Easter, etc. And 1 of those nephews of mine is lying in a grave and I feel, half his aunts don't visit him enough. I will admit I don't feel like I visit him enough but when I go to mass, it's the 1st place I go before mass and the last place I'd go after mass is over. I don't always get to call up during the week but when I do I talk to him the way I would my other nephews. Just because he's in the ground doesn't mean he's not there and that he needs us to know that he's there but I don't believe I can prove this to them. Please pray that my siblings and others in the same situation wake up and come back to the religion we we're brought up in.

Its my experience that most people have no idea what the mass is or how important it is. They most definitely lack basic knowledge of the eucharist. I was once like this and only by Gods grace that I became aware of its importance. The church needs to be more direct and clear about the mass. So with the luke warm attitude of the church and the sandals of the past gives people all the excuses they need to not attend. But there is a hunger for God and the mass. Once I explain our faith to people they become interested. The church must be a beacon again. Be in the world not of the world. Priests and bishops must grow back bones and proclaim the truth

Father, I lead my family (wife and two children - 7 and 4) to attend mass each Sunday. I think we are still technically exempt due to childcare anyway, but I want to set good habits from an early age. But the Church's rule to attend mass on Sunday on forthcoming Christmas Eve and Christmas Day mass is ridiculous. What is the spiritual benefit of this?
@christopher4192 Жыл бұрын
I don't know what the legalists would say, but I think the way to deal with this is to go to a vigil mass for Christmas day. This will be celebrated on the preceding Sunday, so you can 'kill two birds with one stone'. I am rather suspicious, anyway, about the ability of executives in the Church to make rules that they claim to be binding on pain of mortal sin. (An even worse example are those priests or bishops who tell us that it's a mortal sin to support a particular political party.)

There not goin Sunday or Friday or Thursday or any other day of the week. The Catholic Church in Ireland has lost the people of Ireland. Sad but true. With covid, apart from a few brave priests, the church were more than happy to toe Mickey Martin's and Varadker s dictates .
@arvelote4581 Жыл бұрын
Or people of Ireland has lost the faith of the Catholic church? When church was locked , there was still mass going on in some parts, those who really care find the way. For those who it was just a habit, it was actually relieve but its easier to blame church entirely 😕. God does not need our worship. We can add nothing to His Glory. We need God. All we have we have in God. And all the graces flows true the Catholic mass. When I was young I was forced to attend because it is clear that is sin. But nobody explains what mass is and how absolutely fantastic it is for us to be present. Fr. Chris Alar does great work in explaining the faith series.

I'm not a priest, but you give me 5 minutes in the pulpit, and you can bet they will hear about a worthy reception of the Blessed Sacrament, give me another 5 minutes and they will hear about the sin of contraception and the need for purity, chastity, and temperance and daily prayer. I am sick to death of the fuzzy social justice "Jesus" the "accompaniment" with NO CALL TO REPENT. Get on the narrow road people, everybody has to repent, no exceptions, purity chastity and celibacy are the norm for all single Catholics, every one of them. This game playing of blessing this or that perversion as in Germany is a mere vomit of lies. St. Joseph and Our Lady and the example of the Holy Family and that of the saints is the way. There is not a man alive who does not need confession and repentance regularly. Where is the call for the conversion of the world to Christ and the One True Church? Where is the fire to call this insane world to His Church to His Redemption and His Salvation? Why, in all the intercessory prayers I have heard at mass is the conversion of the world to the Holy Faith NEVER, not once, part of the intercessory prayers? Years ago at some masses that had a small attendance they would ask for people to publicly add their intentions, give me that chance an boy I will say it.

I wonder if you can deal with a small problem that I have encountered. The priest has a habit of interposing a song of his own composition (with a religious theme) between the distribution of holy communion and the postcommunion prayer. He sings with the assistance of his guitar and an amplifier, and in a fake American accent. It is the invariable habit of his usual congregation to clap at the end of his performance, so I find his explanation that this will help our thanksgiving meditations unconvincing. I find the whole thing not only distracting but painful. I should like to be able to leave before this performance begins. Would this affect my observance of the basic rule about attendance? (I suppose it's useless these days to suggest that this novelty is itself some kind of liturgical irregularity.)
