Nice to hear someone talk sense. I think the silliest thing now is drivers at 46". No wonder the manufacturers claims of longer distance stack up - well perhaps one drive in twenty that is not out of bounds. I am 6'1" and I play at 44.5" driver and I don't bother with a three wood. Instead I play a 17 degree hybrid at 40.5". Much more enjoyable golf, and isn't that the whole point.

I used to own a 1-iron in a Cleveland set a long time ago. I did a lot of dumb things when I was young.

Over the past 20 years I had customers walk into the shop asking for a #1 iron. My response often enough was a respectful no. When pressed why not, I would inquire as to how well have you been hitting your #2 iron. Usual reply to my question - Don't have one of those. I'd ask about their #3 iron - Nope, not one of those. A #4 iron ? - Yes, one of those in my bag. How well do you strike it? - Terrible. But I still want a #1 . At that point, I'd either take a them in the hitting cage and spend my valuable time having them hit a #4 iron then comparing performance with a #4 hybrid ( even a #7 wood ) and have them judge for themselves. A few still insisted upon the One - Then I'd order up a One, provided any were still cataloged, and complete the sale. WHY you ask... The customer may not be always right; they're still the customer and it's they're money spent with me. They made their choice. After a few weeks, they would often come back and buy a stick I recommended anyhow.
