When my daughter passed away I found crafting the way I got through my depression and gave me time to think of her and at times 13 years later I still do cards that she would have liked. Thanks for sharing. You brought a lot of things I struggle with to light. I get overwhelmed. With myself, with my life in which I am alone and older, and I turned to crafting. I tried to fill my empty life by buying every new crafting thing that I could afford. Then there I was, overwhelmed again. You started a new style of cardmaking, the “use what you have” theory. All of a sudden I didn’t have to learn a new thing and buy items to do it with. I already had what I needed to bnd

I found myself nodding and agreeing with you all the way through this video Jennifer! From the happiness our craft gives to ourselves and others, to the stress relief it provides, there are soo many benefits. I'm guilty of hanging on to cards I've made but just this week I sent some cards to a local church who are raising money to aid the Ukrainian people. It made me very happy! I'm almost permanently bedbound and craft on a big table that my hubby made for me that sits on the side rails of my bed. For such a long time I 'beat myself up' for not being able to produce cards as beautiful and perfect as those I saw on screen. Then one day whilst watching a video of yours I heard you talk about how you struggle with anxiety and depression and how important it is to treat yourself with the kindness that you show others. The penny finally dropped. Even professionals aren't perfect AND they have the benefit of editing lol. I now allow myself to enjoy the process even if it takes me soo much longer than others. Can't say I've gotten over the "perfection bug" as that's just something I've always had...but I can be happy with "that's as perfect as I can possibly make it" lol. I know I've waffled on a bit here but I really wanted you to know just how impactful your wise words are and your wonderfully calm and precise instructions make all us "mere mortals" feel like we can do it too! I appreciate and love your professional yet personal approach to absolutely everything you do. Thankyou, I pray you and your family are safe and well. Hugs from Melbourne Australia. xx

The great thing about cards is that they are only bits of paper that will one day end up in the bin, so that odd gluey spot or ink smudge really doesn't matter. I'm inspired by your ability to over come your own difficulties !
@mawmawvee2 жыл бұрын
Alison, What a wonderful post! I strive for perfection, as well, when making a card for someone. I have relaxed to the point of "Just make the card!" I then found myself thinking--"It's good enough." And--If you get a blob of ink where you don't want it--cover it up with something like it was meant to be there, or put some spatter onto the card and who will ever know there was a mistake, but was it really a mistake? Art is therapy in itself. My heart and prayers go out to you. Thank you so much for sharing your heart with us.

Alison, came here to write a note to Jennifer and found yours first ... I declare we must be twins because I sat here agreeing with every word you wrote. ❣️👏🏻❣️ I too am bedbound and craft upon an adjustable tray table on wheels that spans the width of my bed. (In fact, I have another of the rolling tray tables placed on the right side of my bed and raised about 4" - it holds additional supplies and a Raskog cart stores easily beneath.) I have some OCD issues and really have to fight through my imperfections but I mail them anyway because it matters to me. However and whatever it takes to be creative is worth every effort for ourselves and others. Happy crafting wishes to you! 💝

Wow Jennifer, I really appreciate your courage. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us while showing us cool techniques. I had been feeling stressed about trying to make the perfect card for specific people, cards that would be very personal and took days to make. While I enjoyed it, it was starting to feel like too much pressure. So just for fun, I made a small journal with only a few pages and filled it with fun images and quirky stickers. It gave me so much joy and was something just for me. I need to do more of that, things no one but me will ever see. It also gives me a place to experiment. My 92-year old mother-in-law lives in a retirement complex and she has loved making cards for years. But now, she doesn’t do it much and it’s making her unhappy. So I suggested she make cards to leave at the front desk for other residents to use, and she has found her joy again! She’s become quite a celebrity! Crafting can be so many different things for us.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate this message. I just had a very similar conversation with my therapist yesterday. I have a lot of anxiety at night and I spend way too much time in my bedroom alone so I don't wake up the dog who will want to go out the minute he wakes. My therapist recommended I buy a small desk for my bedroom and to stamp out some images so when I wake up and can't get back to sleep instead of laying in bed letting my mind wander around thinking bad stuff I can stay in my room and get some craft time to help me relax. We talked about me bringing only the things I know how to do so I don't get overwhelmed. Also, I think so many of us are having fear and concerns about what is happening with Ukraine and the rest of the world, so focused on that can be done in a more positive way. Thanks so much.

As one who also suffers from clinical depression, I could relate to so much of this video. Thank you for your transparency, Jennifer. Yes, one of the best parts of making cards is that my hobby can provide encouragement or celebration or comfort to others. (My least favorite part is addressing envelopes!) It makes me happy to think of where all of my cards have ended up, as I create them for my sister (a pastor's wife), a friend who runs a non-profit, and another friend who sends one to each grieving family at the funeral home she works for. I have found I really enjoy sending Valentine's Day cards; it's a less busy time of year and a way to celebrate friends and family and even remind myself that I am loved even though I am unmarried. I sometimes struggle with layout and don't have an end picture in mind when I begin - guess that's why I, too, love to make backgrounds! Love any crafting that allows me to play with color. Thank you, Jennifer, for helping me process my own thoughts about card making as therapy. Praying for the people of Ukraine.

Love all the cards you made. Your explanation about crafting for therapy I can so relate to. Its my escape from depression and anxiety too, so much so I now have 8 very large boxs of cards taking up space. I am currently in the process of sorting them all out for different charity shops local to me in the uk. It's nice to know they might help someone else somehow. One very important thing I have learnt was to stop comparing my crafting to others. I like to look at it as we are all part of the same crafty tree, our crafting is not going to be the same as we are all different branches of that tree. We need to stop stressing ourselves out by thinking we're not as good as so and so, and just enjoy being part of the tree. Thank you for your posts, I find them inspiring. Heres to an end to whats going on in the Ukraine too! x 🇺🇦

Susan.. Hi 🙋🏻♀️ I do the same thing. Just sit, stare and come up with no creative energy (most times can’t even remember what it was I saw that inspired me 🙄). Good advice from Jennifer, of course, on making a list! Then perhaps all I will struggle with is ‘where did I put this n that’! I think that has a bit to do with aging though 😉 But getting our head out from under the covers is a step in the right direction 🤣 🙏🏼 prayers all around!

@@brendapcmt Thank you, Brenda. I tend to get anxiety attacks (undiagnosed, but it really is anxiety...), if I make lists! Go figure. I thank you Jennifer for your loving heart and sharing it with us. You have such a sweet spirit. I thank everyone here who posted so openly. I feel inspired and I ask blessings on all of you. Bless your sweet hearts, always.

Thank you Jennifer. I needed those words of wisdom today. It's so hard to be happy about anything with everything going on, but you did put a smile on my face. Thank you for being so honest, and sharing with us all.

Years ago, I wrote a regular column for a magazine and called it CrafTherapy. I fully believe in how therapeutic being creative can be. Thanks for sharing, you are usually part of my treadmill workout because I love the length and content of your videos! …So your videos and being on our treadmill is like double-therapy :-)

Thank you so much for the reminder to take care of ourselves! I'm one of those people that gets overwhelmed by all the stuff and just have to step back and do simple stamping for a while. I keeps kits on hand for these times. Prayers for Ukraine, prayers for Yana and her family. I knew she was from Ukraine but did not realize she still lived there.
