I moved to Italy 20 years ago from the States, married a local and living north of Milan. I am beyond thankful for the health system here and there is no way I could ever move back to the States because of the difference in the systems. During lockdown in 2020 my husband spent 3 months in the hospital for a series of strokes. Total bill, zero. Gyno visits, more thorough compared to the States. In addition to a pelvic exam and Pap smear, trans vaginal ultrasound evidently is standard. I am SO thankful for that! My doctor found a malignant tumour the size of an orange on my right ovary. I had surgery 2 months later. Total cost €150 for the doctor visit, pre admission exams, surgery, one week in the hospital and follow up exams.

And we italians would pay so much less in taxes if it wasn't for the big phenomena of tax evasion in italy, many italians always complain and try to cheat the system to not pay taxes and politicians try to fix that by raising taxes, if they just knew how things worked elsewhere, especially in the US, they would be kneeling and kissing the very soil they stepped on gruntingly throughout their life.

I am Italian and also have private insurance. Sometimes I get a discount of between 70-90% on the cost of medical visits, other times the cost is covered completely. The insurance costs me about 160€ a year, and to redo my glasses, changing lenses and frames, I paid a total of 20€. A friend of mine has the same insurance, and the budgeted expense for doing laser eye surgery was 150€

Hi Donna! I am not sure how that works and I think it depends on the health care carrier they have here. If they become residents they are eligible for Italian healthcare and I hear that if you combine that with an inexpensive health care plan you can get really good care quickly over there. Check with their healthcare carrier and I would love it if you could let me know. This is a very good question.

Marco Testi The surgery took place at Careggi Hospital in Florence, which is a public hospital, but because I am a foreigner living in Italy, I paid the price of a private hospital. Due to complications, I was also sent to a private rehab center - all this took place at the height of the viral infections. Another reason for my transfer was that Careggi became the center for the treatment of the virus, so all non infected patients were transferred to other hospitals and private clinics. It was quite an adventure! One that I hope not to ever repeat.
