Expat parents! If you are welcoming your first child to the world while abroad, here is what you need to know:
➡️Visit the Nearest US Embassy or Consulate: Schedule an appointment at the nearest US embassy or consulate. They typically have a process for issuing SSNs for US citizens living abroad.
➡️ Fill Out Form SS-5: Complete Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card. You can find this form on the Social Security Administration's (SSA) website or pick it up from the embassy or consulate.
➡️ Gather Required Documents: Ensure you have all the necessary documents, such as your child's birth certificate, proof of US citizenship, and proof of identity.
Attend the Appointment: Go to your scheduled appointment at the embassy or consulate. Present all the required documents and fill out any additional forms as necessary.
➡️ Wait for Processing: Once you've applied, the SSA will process it and mail the SSN card to your address abroad. This process usually takes a few weeks to a couple of months.
➡️ Receive the SSN Card: Once the SSN card arrives, you can use it for various purposes, including tax-related matters such as receiving the Child Tax Credit!
