So many bands crashed at my house in the late 80's early 90's in Eugene. We actually had a guest room so the guys got a real bed in a room with a door! and it was unfortunately mostly guys in the bands Frightwig being a notable exception. No Means No were my favorites both musically and as nice people, my cat adored Rob Wright. We'd cook up a big batch of beans and rice from the food bank to have ready to eat after the show. Good times. I hope bands are still doing this.

I’ve only stayed at a hotel once on tour . We were in a Walmart Parking lot around 3am in Phili & we were from Texas. A long way from home. Our contact for a place to crash flaked so our guitarist decided to wait until 3am to tell us that his dad worked for a Motel 6 and he could get us a free room...... If you are in a band, in any way helped book a show for a touring band, or are just a fan of music and a decent person it’s an unspoken rule that you ALWAYS offer the out of town band a floor to crash on. I’ve done it for bands & 99% of the time when I was on tour people offered up front. It was fucking cool & restored a little of my faith in human beings.

So true what Albini is talking about with keeping a small overhead. You can make just as much money or more being a small band and doing the DIY ethic as a medium sized band on a big major label. This is where a band like NOFX really succeeded. They never signed to a big label when they could have and they were for sure better for not signing. Unless you are one of the few selling millions of units, there is really no need to sign to a big label. In fact, it will most likely only hurt you.

All well and good if you’re in a punk band.....but if you are attempting to put on a show of higher quality snd more production, costs are inevitably going to go up.

How would you tour internationally then? If you don't speak the language, what would be your plan? Do you get a tour manager then?

Have to wonder what would have happened if Nirvana had taken this route?
@robwalsh9843

Basically all of the underground punk and metal touring bands back then had the same type of touring philosophy. No big label is backing you, so you have to cram into vans, make friends with people so you can crash at their homes, conserve money for food and gas, etc. Nirvana DID go through with this touring method. Just read about their European tour with Tad.

@Dan D Maybe initially they did. That all went out the window when they signed with Geffen and released Nevermind. Then they had their pretty faces all over MTV. Then they were staying in the $1000 a night hotels and have multiple tier management types leaching on, which is the exact opposite of what Albini is talking about.

Don't get me wrong, not that I am hating on Nirvana for signing to a big label. They did what was totally in their realm to do. They had the aptitude to sell those millions of records. However, I obviously can't speak for Kurt or Nirvana or anyone, but I am willing to bet that Kurt would have been much happier overall on a smaller label do his thing on a slightly smaller scale.

@@dcrea9416 Nirvana's rise was deliberate. Kurt Cobain did some internal struggles with it especially later on, but not as much as he may have let on.
@dcrea9416

@@SinewRending Totally man, I agree. If someone didn't know any better, you would have thought that someone put a gun up to Kurt Cobain's head and forced him to become a rock star. Kurt Cobain at least initially wanted to be a star. Then it became too much for him when it actually happened.
