Millet is an important crop in dry areas of Pakistan, used for both fodder and grain. Watch this video for advice on selecting hybrid varieties. The Maize and Millet Research Institute (MMRI) in Yousof wala Sahiwal has developed a high-yielding hybrid variety YBH 278 that is heat tolerant and has better yields than most other hybrids. Another successful variety is the high-yielding Pioneer hybrid marketed by CORTIVA, called 86 M 88. Either of these two varieties may be selected for grain purposes. Sowing should take place in mid-July, as millet is a fairly heat-tolerant crop. It may also be planted after mid-June, but this should be avoided if there is severe heat. Millet is gaining importance not only as bird food but also as a major ingredient in several precious products and medicines. This video provides advice on selecting varieties and sowing times under changing climate conditions, and several modifications in millet production technology are expected in the future.
