Some of the growth of USA Judo must have come from USJF and USJA members who want to compete in USA Judo events. Two years ago, they could have with their JF/JA memberships, but with USA Judo breaking the American Judo Alliance, those competitors had to join USA Judo. Consequently, USA Judo may have grown, but judo in the US remained static.

A strong, central organization is better than a fragmented system. There’s a lot that can be learned from the NBA, MLB, NFL, US Soccer and how judo is organized in other countries. USJF and USJA should be folded into USA Judo with the board expanded to give them seats and representation.

I think judo needs to start having cross-sport tournaments where the athletes are allowed to compete in other grappling sports and represent judo. they should be able to compete in those, win money as well as have judo specific tournaments where others are invited.

I'm very interested in understanding the dynamics of what is going on because I think some of the things with USA Judo is a microcosm of Judo in other places and parts of history regarding politics. I've read through the transcript of the video where Nicole is mentioned by name twice. Am I correct in my interpretation that where Colton disagrees with her is where the money comes from to push Judo forward? She wants it from Just medals through the Olympics but he and Jimmy prefer to get 3rd parties involves to expedite things? Would the NBA be as evolved into the market it has without Fox Sports, Game Time, Sports Centre, Nike, McDonalds, Adidas, Wheaties, HOOPS magazine etc? Not to forget the popular newscasters with the athletes. Product association and branding with professional athletes and coaches with long careers is still a problem. You need more money and the sport needs evolving including pedagogy because nothing should stay still and Judo has been rotating very slowly and I think Covid was a wakeup for DEFCON level 1. Membership plummeting, old age coaches dropping off like flies.... If you go with the adage that: - for every 10,000 people who normally try martial arts 1x becomes a Dan grade. - then for Pareto distribution of those who become Dan grades 2-5% have the talent to contend with the top flight talents from around the world. - these guys have 300 size Judo club programmes. So 10,000 x 300 for that many blackbelts is 3,000,000 people as a participant pool to step into a dojo just to begin the journey. - now we want 2% of those elite 300? 6 people is 2% of 300. So now we want to contend with how many people compete for an Olympic medal. You need 14x Judoka for the Olympics? 386 athletes go to an Olympic event for Judo. - your country wants 1x damn medal from 45x available to more than 130 countries? 3 millions participants to get 6 people, 45/6*3,000,000=22,500,000 people sorted through for Olympic talent. - that means for the whole world to get an Olympic medal you need to be 1/22,500,000 people. It's a sudden death sport with the highest metabolic demands of anything in the world. To be a Shohei Ono you then have to be even rarer because he winds multiple medals for multiple Olympics events. Why would you pin the whole future of Judo in North America purely on medals and squeezing through a handful of people over 4x year cycles..... that's too close to business being played as lottery tickets because there's no diversification in acquiring funds. It's bad business. Basketball is a professional sport and also participates in the Olympics, Judo needs to be the same. Totally independent with it's growth and money. Look at how many talent development leagues the NBA has where guys still earn enough money to have families comfortable. You don't get comfortable, financially successful athletes and coaches in Judo and that is just wrong, the opposite is too socialist. However I don't blame Nicole for wanting to go to war when told that a priority is to reduce funding and keep suffocating what she clearly loves. She totally has a point that such things are very messed up and dumb considering 8,000 participants being a massaged number with handed out belts and free summer memberships is also just wrong. England has 27,000 participants and the UK 30,000 in total which is crap compared to 100,000 in the 60's/70's. So 2024 USA Judo is 8k? 8K?!?!?!? Things are not adding up so badly that clearly a lot of people might think of a French Revolution to clear the board and start again.

One Source reports that he started Judo at 17. But that seems late if his dad was a Judoka

Colton needs to contact the web developers of Judobase. There is a bug when looking him up.
