I live in London and drivers do this all the time :( I see a lot of guide dogs in training along my route everyday so unfortunately I think they encounter this problem a lot. Even as a sighted person I find it hard sometimes to decide which way is safest to get around a vehicle on the crosswalk, so I can't imagine what a guide dog has to go through to make that call! Glad Antonia got over her fear and was able to guide you so confidently for so many years 💕

Love you Joy, what a great story. So informative! It makes perfect sense. I love these guide dogs and I see them all the time where I live. I live near the The Seeing Eye Dog school and I have so much respect for the trainers who walk beside the blind individuals and their dogs. It touches my heart what these beautiful angels can do. I look forward to hearing more of your stories Joy! You are amazing, I know Antonio has passed, she was beautiful. Love Gayle :-) ♡

Hi Joy, Thank you for your wonderful videos! I've learned so much on how to guide the blind when I come across them. You have a wonderful personality and you're so positive, it's contagious! Hi, just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed this video, but then again I enjoy all your videos LOL! I discovered your channel about a year and a half ago, and I went all the way back to the beginning of your channel and watched all your videos. You probably hear this a lot, but you and Antonia inspired me so much! After watching you and Antonia I realize that I did not have to sit at home alone, that I could get out in the world and be independent. I applied to a guy dog school was excepted and graduated with my own guy dog in July of this year. Thank you so much because without your inspiration I never would’ve had the courage to

You have come a long way joy♥️ you are brave and strong. Sorry this happened to you and Antonia , my heart really went through when you said Antonia also developed fear of that corner of the interaction, what kind of lady would be who was parking her car like that and didn't even bothered to take it back this is sad . Just happy you both could work it out again with your instructors really brave of you Joy. ♥️ And we miss Antonia she was a brave and kind soul and a beautiful pet. Prayers and love.

My retired dog has done so much for my confidence and while it makes me said to picture my life without my current dog, I know its best for me to move forward with dog # 2. Not only to maintain my independence, but my mental heath as well! Thank you so much for making these videos because they are helping my heart heal!

Wow, thank you. It’s so incredibly difficult emotionally moving from one DOC to another. I need to do a video on how it was for me when I made the decision to apply for receiving Arabella. When you love and trust one angel to be your helper and true life support for so many years, it’s incredibly challenging learning how to trust another just as much. I am so happy you are going to be applying for a new dog. It’s so hard closing one chapter, but I believe God wants us to keep moving forward in life experiencing all it has to offer. Keep me updated on your journey I will be cheering you on 💛

Hey Joy, as a sighted driver, I promise to be very careful with crosswalks from now on. I never want to put anyone in a scary situation like you went through. Have you already done, or would you consider doing a video on how to properly sighted guide? I would love to be prepared to properly guide someone if they ever needed it. The only two things I know how to do properly are never to grab the other person and to offer my elbow instead, while vocally describing that I'm doing so. Is it better to offer a left or right elbow? How heavily should I warn for obstacles ahead? How to guide someone through a doorway? I think others might benefit from and enjoy learning this too. Thank you for inspiring me and so many others here. God bless!

Khanh HM Thank you so much for giving me this reply. It matters so much to me that I don't ever make anyone feel uncomfortable, regardless of their personal struggle. I hear the term fake service dogs a lot lately and was wondering what exactly is a fake service dog? Is it where someone who has no disability or health issue claims a dog is a service dog rather than a pet or is it where someone has a service dog for medical conditions that don't really need a service dog? I've always found emotional support dogs a bit of a grey area as some people do benefit from having one but others don't.
@Positivekitten4 жыл бұрын
FC360D Usually, it’s people who try to pass their pet off as a service dog by buying fake credentials, vests etc. online. These dogs have no training, can end up being very aggressive towards a genuine service dog, and also it has made it very hard for people with real service dogs to be taken seriously because of all the fraud that is going on... All just because someone didn’t want to leave Muffy at home while they went to the mall.
@MistyDaveLeah4 жыл бұрын
Emotional support dogs also dont have public access. A fake service dog is a pet that not task trained to mitigate a disability.

I’m so glad you did this video!! Yesterday I trained with my cane at intersections. It’s so terrifying to cross streets when you aren’t able to see. I didn’t realize when you first got Antonia you didn’t cross intersections. When you filled out your application to get a guide dog and you had to show them your route that you would take, did you have to show them an intersection route? I don’t cross intersections often so I don’t want them to deny me because of that. Lol I just need your number so I can text you a million questions 😂 lol jk! I do have a ton of questions though.
@JoyRoss4 жыл бұрын
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful to what you are going through. Oh my goodness, yes, let’s chat over the phone this week. Message me on Facebook and I will give you my number. No, you do not have to show them a route with an intersection crossing. I did not with either dog. You only have to demonstrate for them one route that you are confident on. The interview process is not as daunting as people think. The instructors really want to see you succeed, always remember that :-) look forward to talking soon 💜

Hey Joy I found your channel like a week ago and I am absolutely loving it!! But I have a question I've been wanting to ask someone blind for a long time ago When I close my eyes out in the sun or even inside my room I can still feel the brightness inspite my eyes being closed... Can you distinguish the brightness from darkness too?
@JoyRoss4 жыл бұрын
So glad you are enjoying my content. And let me try answering your question. I see no light with my eyes open or closed. There’s not even any light or shadows perceived whatsoever. However, and I’m only answering this from my perspective because every blind individual sees Differently. I perceive light only through sensation/heat. For instance, when I go outside in the sun, when the bright warm sunshine hits my face, my mind perceives light because it can remember what that used to look like when I would feel the sunshine on my skin. So basically, heat translates to light, does that make sense? My eyes in fact will squint and tear up when I’m in the bright sunshine because my mind tricks me into thinking I am seeing light. We have also tested this theory with a bright flashlight right in my eyes. My family can turn on or off a flashlight in my face and I will not blink at all. The only time I begin to blink or dart my eyes away is if my eyes since extreme heat from the light. Cool right?

hi joy! i have a question, when you are out shopping by yourself, how do you pay, in bills? a credit/debt card?
@JoyRoss4 жыл бұрын
I always pay with credit card :-). Occasionally depending on the store or situation I may use dollar bills, but it’s so much more difficult to use them. I have to know how much I have in my wallet, have to fold each denomination differently so I would know which one is what, and then making sure the cashier gave me the right amount back is challenging. It’s a lot safer to use Credit cards.
