Orin, I am very grateful for your demonstrations and for your direct approach to pomology. You have helped me regenerate four orchards. I learned more from you in thirty minutes than I have reading three books.

Hi, i'm from Algeria with Mediterranean weather, i've several fruit trees (stone ones like nectarine/peaches/apricots), i noticed for most trees that growth for shoots is established in two phases, first phase in spring and slow down with fruit growing/maturing and the second phase after fruit harvesting during summer. The rate growth in spring is largely predominant over the growth in summer, that explain the store/use of carbohydrates. My understating is that each tree species has specific growth curve depending also the location/weather. With your explanation, now i understand why the winter grafting is most appropriate period with high rate of success, the grafted trees that i have done this year shows 90% success in comparison with other seasons. thank you soo much for sharing this valuable knowledge.

Very helpful, thank you so much for sharing this. The vast majority of authors are merely telling you what to do, but only the rare gems describe how things actually work. Checking out your book now.

Your videos are invaluable to me right now… I am planting my fruit orchard right now, and I’m in the same hardiness 9b as you so I can follow along with confidence. I appreciate the videos sir. Hitting green acres nursery tomorrow for 7 more trees to finish everything off.

Uc Santa Cruz agriculture, what I really need is help with my fields… the ground here is low ph.. where do I find truckloads of lime in northern ca to till in? I am in butte county… I ask and ask at places I think should know and nobody seems to know. I want to grow hay and grass and forage for my cows and goats, but the ground is so acidic the only thing that grows is yellow star thistle. Add to that, the soil here is very very sandy, being composed mainly of decomposed granite and oak forest leavings as the organic material… I’m working on huge compost piles to get some goodness to spread around and till in my fields, but I definitely need to get the ph, it tests around 6 with a home la motte test kit. This property has been neglected for years before I got it…

I love watching your demonstrations. I've always wanted a crabapple tree and at 71 years of age, I finally got one, Red Sentinet, intending to prune the same way as you advise for apple trees. But the nursery here in Ireland says no! Crab trees should not be pruned especially the branch tips. The tree is about 7ft with 9 lateral branches all on the top 2ft. each about 12 to 14 inches long and has loads of fruit bunches on them. Can you give me any advice, please. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Maggie xx

Hello, thanks for the great videos. I have 2 pear trees about 7 yrs old. A Keifer and an Ayers. I'm zone 6b. The last few years I've been getting beauitful blooms that turn into swelling green baby fruit but then turn black about 2-3 weeks later and drop from the tree. Not sure what the issue is. My guess is that its frreze damage. Any ideas or tips? I have been regularly pruning and it looks like i will have tons of flowers again this spring. I would love some fruit.
@ucscagroecology Жыл бұрын
If yer getting a freeze after fruit set, it's likely the cause of the fruit turning black. Hopefully, you won't get freeze burn this year and have lots of fruit! what will happen to my trees this year? its February in lower NY, and its been 50-60 degrees for a week, then 5-25degrees for a week, now its 60 again, and 30 next week. some of my trees appear to be growing little buds maybe. they are about 3 -4years old. will this destroy any possibilities of fruiting? its quite a wacky winter, havent seen snow.
@ucscagroecology Жыл бұрын
Not sure what will happen, given the radical swing in temperatures. Probably the most critical time will be when the blossoms emerge. The weather needs to above 50 degrees (60-70 is ideal) and light winds for pollinators to fly and pollinate the blossoms and fruit to set. You can help your trees with additional pollinators called mason bees. Here's a video on how to set them up in your orchard: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJqTeailh6hqoJI Below is a link to several dozen more fruit tree care videos. Lets discuss exclusively apple vs stonefruit pruning being as apples spurs fruit on 2 yr old wood & stonefruit on 1 yr old wood only. Very BIG difference. Am i pruning off potential fruit? Enjoy the vids immensely.

Glad the videos are helpful. Yes, pruning apples and stone fruit require different techniques. Q: "Am I pruning off potential fruit"? A: You could be depending on what you "prune off".
