Make sure there aren't illegal characters in the variable names and make sure you CLOSE the excel file before importing. You may need to save and close everything and start the import over.

Either recode in SPSS or find replace match all cell content in excel. In either case save before, do it carefully, and save as different filename after. That way if you make an error, you still have the original data.

csv can be used in almost every stats program so it's better in that regard. However, I find it's easier to spot problems importing the data when it's coming from a spreadsheet.

If there are no data in the new data file, you most likely need to close the Excel file before importing it.

Yes, that is the default missing value. It should be treated as such in the analysis. I haven't used pspp very much, so verify that it is being treated as missing data.

If the response format contains zero subtract the high endpoint from each case to reverse code. If the response format starts at 1 subtract 1 plus the high endpoint from each case.

Try it at your own risk, but if I recall correctly, the variable didn't import. ? Is an illegal character in an SPSS variable name.

Check to make sure the spreadsheet doesn't have illegal characters in variable names. You might have this issue if you have multiple answers in a cell. Unfortunately, I don't have a workaround for that but I'm sure one exists.
