There’s a trick to it: I managed to get most of my OCs to have no scars by making one OC that gets ALL the scars. All of them. Trauma is one of the easiest ways to add depth to a character. Part of that is because it allows a character to have genuine growth and rise above a previous experience. It also helps define a character- figuring out how they'd react in a certain situation. Characters without trauma can often end up flat, or have no development, which is why most trauma-less characters are side characters or villians with no tragic background. That's not to say an oc without trauma always has no depth. It can be done. Sorry for the rant. :p

It's an interesting way to add depth to a character IF they're written well. Trauma doesn't automatically make a character good or interesting. Like that one comment said, they actually have to have growth and development, lmao. I personally don't think every character needs trauma to be good, tho. Sometimes, a characters positive background and morals can help them progress through the conflicts of the story. Also, yeah I do agree that it's not that big of a deal, but most of this type of content supposed to be kind of funny or smth. 🤷🏾‍♀️

it's funny cuz i have 8 characters with 0 trauma but they are all siblings and their parental figure has ALL the trauma, was literally a trauma sponge growing up, it's literally like they were trauma jesus who took everyone's trauma as their own to save them

Aww! 5 of my characters are in a family too: a stressed mother and her 4 emotionally awful kids. The youngest is always sad, the second youngest is constantly furious at everything, the second oldest is tired all the time, and the oldest is a complete narcissist. But despite all that, she still loves them.

While you can have conflict without any very negative experiences in a character's background, they are effective and realistic ways to create conflict. The issue does not lie within the presence of these very negative experiences, but in their abundance. One of my favorite ways of approaching these sorts of things is to remember that people only have a very limited amount of "core memories" and that they're not all negative experiences. When deciding these core memories, also take into account the age of your character. Realistically speaking, a teenager will usually have far less notable memories of any variety than someone older. Overall, it's best to remember that life's pretty boring without some conflict!
