I think Erwin will choose Armin and Armin will choose Erwin. Erwin: He let Armin lead the search in the walls and compliments him. This means that he considers Armin's potential. Erwin also accepted his fate and said "We die trusting the living who give meaning in our sacrifice". For Armin, of course, he respects Erwin so much. He knew that he will never be as good as him. Until now, we can observe how Armin still compares himself to Erwin when it comes to decision-making. They both have amusing dreams. They are both ready to sacrifice their dreams for the sake of humanity. They are both ready to give the syringe to each other if they had a chance. What makes them different is their leadership. Erwin has intelligence with guilt while Armin has intelligence with doubts.

The ironic thing about this decision, is that after all of the arguments on who would be better for humanity - none of that mattered. The decision was ultimately made purely based on emotions by all sides. Eren and Mikasa wanted to bring their friend back, disregarding humanity’s future. No matter what reasons they brought up, their connection to Armin was the deciding factor. And on the other hand, Levi, who was trusted to make a logical decision on the fly, chose Armin only because of his connection to Erwin. Levi didn’t decide who will live, he decided who will die. He saw how enslaved Erwin was to his dream. How it took over his life. What would’ve happened if he reached the basement? He doesn’t even know. His life has one end goal, and there’s nothing after that. So Levi decided to set him free, to let him pass on. I think it’s valid to discuss who would’ve been the better choice, but personally I think the point of that scene is that it doesn’t even matter.
@junior5232 жыл бұрын
True
@fauzuliana Жыл бұрын
@veraaurelis8931 Жыл бұрын
Yup. But also ultimately if we look at if from the reader’s POV, Armin’s survival makes sense since it’s passing the torch to the next generation and all that. Narratively speaking.
@mkazaa8 ай бұрын
it was an emotional decision on his part true and he did it so that his friend could be laid to rest and no longer be forced to play the role of devil that everybody viewed him as, however it also makes sense from Levi's perspective. When comparing their dreams and taking into account what Kenny said to him he realised that once Erwin had seen the truth in the basement there was a chance he simply would lose interest beyond that. The dream he was a slave to was in reach and Erwin himself admitted it. Everything he did, all the plans he came up with and all the steps forward they made thanks to him was in service of reaching this dream so once he had achieved it there was no clear plan beyond that. Maybe he would simply lose that certain aspect that pushed him forward and made him such a great commander since in his mind he already got what he wanted, there was no further reason to try as hard. Meanwhile with Armin he had his eyes set outside the walls. He has proven that he has humanities interest at heart as well. His dream takes him further than just the basement and the truth but to the seas and ultimately they need someone with the drive to go further rather than a commander who might possibly phone it in.

Levi was dead set in his decision to save Erwin before Erwin raised his hand and asked the question that got his father killed. I think what makes this episode so interesting is the fact that you can make countless arguments for either Armin or Erwin being a good choice. You can argue that while Ewrin was the more experienced commander, his goal only reached the basement, while Armin's reached the sea and the whole outside world. Or that while Armin is young and smart, no one can touch the hearts of their soldiers quite as well as Erwin. It's so fascinating that the dilemma in this episode is still talked about even years after it was released.
@Voidaken2 жыл бұрын
You actually can't. Armin is objectively better, and you can only make a few arguments for Erwin that still get overtaken by counterpoints. Erwin was actually a terrible commander throughout the duration of the show, assuming he even was all that great off-screen.

@@rahulrahulrake As opposed to irrelevant. You don't negate a character's stats because someone may be worse. Hange(and Erwin) is a commander, not a political leader. If Erwin has to be pushed down to make that point, then that's the way it has to be. Armin and Hange's insecurity in themselves is not a testament to Erwin. I don't know what it is but the one still of Armin laying back in the arms of his friends is so powerful to me. The whole process of transformation is literally like some twisted rebirth. From being essentially dead, to a mindless monster, to pulling back out of the nape of his pure titan form. It makes my throat tighten and I can't explain why. He's like a newborn in that moment
@MishaHusnainAli2 жыл бұрын
It's so appropriate that Levi heard both Armin's dream and literally asked Erwin what his dream was. Erwin's approach burning through hundreds of lives got them this far, but from here on, they need Armin and the goal of something good in the world beyond the wall.

Another question I don't see raised often because of the obvious "Erwin or Armin" debate is, IF the platypus Titan hadn't saved Reiner, would you have fed Reiner or Berthold to whoever got the injection?
@MadeByIsmael2 жыл бұрын
I guess they might not know this yet at this point in the show, but the obvious answer is to feed them both to Armin. Imagine an armored colosal titan. Nobody could mess with him. That being said, if it had to only be one I'd probably go with the armor
@lucianatretiak2 жыл бұрын
For me they were going to choose Berthold. The colossal titan for me is a better advantage than the other, because of its great height, the steam it releases and the fact that when it transforms it is as if a bomb fell. (Sorry if something is not understood, use the translator)

Leadership can be taught. Armin's brilliance cannot. Its a natural gift that he alone possesses. It's an easy choice for me, I give the shot to Armin.
@ebrimajallow3165 Жыл бұрын
Erwin was a brilliant strategist anyway. We've seen it since s1 with his formations. S2 with taking back Eren and finding out Reiner and Bertholdt's true identities. S3 with bringing down the government. If you think about it in a war sense, we didn't know Marley would leave for 4 years. If they hadn't, how would Armin develop into a leader so soon. If the war was immediate, Erwin would be the better choice. But if the war was years into the future, as it turned out to be, Armin is the better choice. Though Armin wasn't ready to lead at that point, anyway.

Fun fact:Erwin was securing supply lines outside the wall for years, but they couldn't access it because of the boulder armin made eren put up, forcing them to go through another gate and lose all their progress
@jaxon21222 жыл бұрын
I mean, Eren put the boulder there so he could have easily moved it out of the way again. The problem was they didn’t have a way to secure the wall without it, and that was more important. So they decided to use the Eastern gate at first, and then eventually made the horse elevators to go over the walls without the gates, as shown by this expedition leaving from Trost.

See what I love is not only do Levi's own words to Erwin play a role in his choice, but FLOCH'S words do too. Saying killing Erwin would be a mercy, wanting him to 'taste more of this hell', and Levi realizes it's time for Erwin to rest and be free of the cruelty their world heaps upon them. Erwin did not have the hope in the world beyond as Armin does.

Personally it should have been Erwin who lived. If you truly think about it cause not a lot of people did. Yes, Armin had the plan for the colossal titan and them hiding in the wall. But if you look at Erwin’s track record and everything he has the vet experience, commander of the scouts, respect of EVERYONE, people follow him so easily such as the rookies who he convinced to follow him to his death for the plan to stop the beast titan, literally SAVED Erin otherwise he would of went to the MPs, had the plan to defeat the Reiss titan who’s not 50 meters like the colossal but 100 meters, his plan to capture the female titan but not only that damn near succeeded the first time, the plan to overthrow the government and the list just goes on with even his HUGE gambles. Erwin overall was the better pick. As sad as it would be for Armin but Erwin beats Armin on every level. He’s brilliant strategist himself like Armin.

Everyone has already said this: the choice in this episode is heartbreaking either way, because it means one of the best characters in the series is going to die no matter what. However, I have something to say. In my opinion, the choice made was the only choice that could be made, for the simple reason that for the character who survived, there was still a story to be told.
