I've not played MC seriously in years. But my way of tackling the Nether was 1) First entry with no armour or expensive gear. Only Food, Sword, Pick, torches, a Shield, Cobblestone, and a flint and steel in case the portal gets shut off. 2) Fortify the portal so you can return with your good gear. 3) Upon finding the fortress, build a portal IN the fortress at the start of your crawl but relocate the portal near the Blaze spawners. 4) Assuming your built your base near spawn, a compass will take you home so you can make a path back for quick access to the fortress from the overworld. You can even have a bed at the portal for even faster deployment in the event you died fighting the Blazes. It's safer.
