Sadly the Original rule says in so many words "player must attempt to hit the ball to the best of HIS ability. This had two parts . First the Ref has to work out how good the player is and second he must try to play at the ball as best as he can. BUT it seems today and for a while the Refs in these matches will call miss no matter how many cushions you go around and miss by a mm.... MISS!!!! Watch original world finals and matches Davis, Hendry ect back a bit and you would see the Ref make decision on if that was a good enough try and just 2 cushions and certainly 3!! Even Ronnie can be certain how cushions will react over multiple hits and diff speeds and why "Doubles" are unreliable as Steve Davis said as the ball goes in and even under the rail and rebounds unnaturally. So today, you have to hit the red ball basically no matter how impossible it is and really unworkable but it takes the decision and bias our for the refs hands people will argue. I was a qualified B grade ref Aust, coach and A grade player.
