Jimmy! I've been shouting this for months now on reddit and yt videos. I don't think Ryu is being played correctly by most top players against Guile! I have like an 80% win rate against Guile and that includes masters up 1700 MR (Ive never faced higher to test against the real top level. So forgive me if I am truly missing something). Essentially, Ryu does not need to get in on guile. Ryu actually wins zoning from mid-distance and even far. You can test it out on the training room at max speed Hadoken slowly overwhelms Guile, even with perfect booms. Ex Hadoken trades at speed with Guile and beats his normals. If you can get some denjin off then od denjin beats everything Guile can throw. Sonic blade takes just about as long as denjin for Guile to do so there's no reason not to also be charging denjin at every free moment just like Guile does. I've done this technique a crazy amount of times against Master Guile players and always force them to jump in to me and then I have the advantage. Maybe I'm wrong and above 17 1800 MR this doesn't work for some reason but it works insanely good for me and I don't see any good ryu players ever trying it. They just keep parrying and trying to jump in. Something to think about.

@@uknowdmal807 Yes! There is even one match out there from like a month ago where Paladin beat Knuckledu by like a full two matches (Like 4-2) and guess what? He zoned a ton more than in this video and Knuckledu was forced to start guessing jump ins and suddenly the match doesn't seem so bad for Ryu. I always wondered after that performance if Paladin was intentionally doing that or just got lucky and didn't even realize how much the zoning was a factor in that win. His performance here makes me think the latter. I really want to see a top player demonstrate for me and practice that this zoning doesn't work against Guile. I don't put in nearly the hours they do to compete against people at that level in all the other aspects, but I haven't even seen them attempt it. Besides that one time Paladin did it. (Likely by accident) and suddenly he had a solid win. And he only did it minimally and didn't push it nearly as far as I think he could have. Didn't even attempt it in this match and the results were as expected. Literally anytime I see a ryu player in master league start trying to fight against a strong Guile by doing Parry all day and trying to get a lucky jump in and I already know how the match is going to conclude. I feel like this is Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter 4 tech that always worked against Guile that Ryu wins from a specific range mid but not too close. It feels like it was completely forgotten when people played SF5 where ryu truly lost from all distances the zoning war. People haven't realized that it's more like SF4 and SF2 here where Ryu wins the zoning from the right distances. Maybe we're both wrong, but I want to see a strong explanation about why and a demonstration of how it doesn't work. Considering the only time I've seen a top player fight the fireball war even slightly against the best Guile he won.

He's not talking about this match as in paladin having time. He is saying that a good buff to Ryu would be giving him the option of when charged spend or not spend said charge... at the moment once you charge next special you use either hashogeki or hadouken will spend it. Having the option would make a huge difference. That's what he is talking about.

This and reducing the total frames of the Denjin Charge animation would be nice (using the denjing charge and still having some oki after DR would really help Ryu).
@EAprima
@EAprima 11 ай бұрын
@@LuisOliva95I have no problem with the charging frames as I think it's fair, but the amount you can currently store is ridiculous when you consider Luke ultra fast projectile, Deejay's double projectiles from using strong, and Guile using super fast and choosing when to unless his cover up sonic booms all TRUMPS Ryu. It's insanely ridiculous. This is how I would improve Ryu Denjin. I would give him a storage counter of around 7-10 that can be generated in two ways: > WAY #1 - Do a Denjin charge. > WAY '2 - Deflect a projectile or body special attack (Cammy's canon drill, Marisa's gladiator punch, Ehonda's headbutt, etc) by using the Hashogeki. If Ryu wants to use the Denji Fireball, he would have to execute it by pressing Strong Punch. Weak and Medium Fireball will not unleash the Denji Fireball. Ryu can release TWO forms of EX Denji Fireballs: > Form #1 - *Medium & Strong Punch* EX Denji Fireball will release a super fast 3 hit Denji Fireball as normal and result in a knockdown. > Form #2 - *Weak & Medium Punch* EX Denji Fireball will release a normal speed but a STUN version of the Denji Fireball. With the correct positioning, Ryu can either dash or Drive Rush to catch up and combo attack his opponent. The damage output of this STUN version will be 10-15% weaker than the knockdown version. Also. My thoughts on improving the Hashogeki: 1. STANDARD EX HASHOGEKI - Will result in an 3-hits Air knockdown/up that you can follow up with a floating combo or ground combo connect with ANY CA. 2. HOLDING STANDING EX HASHOGEKI - Will perform the same as above but also increase the damage by 25% and generate Armour. The con of doing this version is you cannot immediately connect it with a CA on grounded combo. 3. OTHER HASHOGEKI - All other Hashogeki will continue to perform as current. That's how I would improve Ryu's Denji Fireball and Hashogeki.

This is a great idea and it sounds fun too as it's a meta game in itself. Hashoki to absorb energy attacks to build the denjin charge. Someone should alert Capcom about this ASAP as the update may come out at the end of this month, which is around the corner. This means any new work might not make it in the new update so we got to be fast communicating this idea to them.

This matchup clearly demonstrates Ryu's lack of tools compared to Ken, who has no such issue. This video proves that anyone who claims Ryu doesn't have trouble is mistaken. Furthermore, it highlights how Ryu is overly reliant on Drive Rush while many other character have plenty of moves in both normals and specials that compensate for it. It's like the game designer created Ryu first and then came up with new ideas for the other characters without going back to update Ryu to match their new capabilities. So yes, if anyone argue against the fact that Ryu is lacking tools and demands an insane level of understanding the game just to get him to the level that Paladin, Deadace, Endingwalker, Jimmy, Darlin and other top Ryu players are, this is the video to show them. It's a mess, and I hope Capcom realise and rectify this issue in Season 2. It's a shame. Ryu. Need. Buffs. Via. Tools. Thanks for the evaluation, Jimmy. Great analysis and thanks for proving my point about Ryu. Now, give me a love for you know what I said was true.

Problem is they didn't upgrade ryu enough to the new mechanics. Guile can constantly throw booms with as almost instant recovery for a flash kick. Where for ryu has more of a delay after fireballs.. plus his fireballs have upgraded to be faster. You can see they are trying to get rid of ryu as the poster boy, when Luke has these absurd speedy projectiles. With all the tools you give guile you also let him absorb all Ryan's fireballs with his ex enhanced booms. On top of that guile has always been in a great position in classic mode cause charge back down covers sooo many tools. Flashkick, antiair punch and booms. Best tools for a turtle.

I'd like to try Nuckledu, man. I'd like to see how it goes when one tries to: - answer his sonic booms with a [preferably denjin] shinkuu hadoken (limited resource) - trade close sonic booms for s.HK or M. Joudan (still takes dmg; high % failure rate) - DI sonic booms (could be too slow and get DI'd; disastrous) - L. Tatsu at close Sonic Booms (requires guesswork; can get punished terribly) - creating space by backing up, using OD hadouken to make time for a Denjin charge, or getting cornered in attempts to jump Tatsu over his head (several points of possible failure, here) I wonder what might work best, man... nothing surefire, to my knowledge.

It's so frustrating as a Ryu player, especially one like myself who played during the SF2 days when Ryu had one of the Top-3 projectiles in the game, and could not only compete with Guile back then when his Sonic Boom was absolutely ridiculous, but could beat it out in most situations, to where now you can't even control the match with your Hadoukens anymore up against Guile, or so many other characters for that matter. I'm just annoyed at this, and I can't understand how characters so many new, cool, amazing options, and Ryu is STILL stuck in the same mode...but his options that made him Strong in the older SF games are somehow not made stronger. If you give Ken 2340982340982 more kicks, ways to carry opponents across the damn map, you give Cammy new tools, on top of her old amazing tools...Guile STILL has the ability to throw out 15 billion Sonic Booms. However, oh wait...Ryu can't have anything...because, we want you to play Hadouken + DP...but we're not going to allow Ryu's Hadouken to contend with other projectile characters...okay....cool. It's frustrating, and at this point, I just feel like it's deliberate with how they are making Ryu now.
@tyty0071
@tyty0071 11 ай бұрын
In order to be successful, Ryu would have to play mind games with Guile. It's not always about closing the distance and it's OK to sometimes get pushed back again allowing forward jump over booms without risk of getting flash kicked. If you can make Guile impatient and go on the offensive, this is where he's vulnerable.. It sucks but this is the only way to have any chance at a good Guile.

I know Capcom should work on evolve SF6 (and it will do), but right now, I think Paladin should have another character as an option for some match ups. Just like Nuckledu and MenaRD does. Remember that on the next fight (grand finals) even Nuckedu played as Cammy! Mena, for example, has a great Blanka. But sometimes when it’s hard to win some match ups, Mena gets his Luke out of his pocket!

The frame data on the Boom is too good. 10fr start up, 30fr recovery = 40 total. Recovers 7 frames faster than Ryu. So much time to react to jumps and DI. I think paladin is being downplayed a little in this match here. He did a lot of things correctly. It wasn't just always lucks. The only thing i could see paladin doing better was to stop parrying the sonic booms because guile was just using that as bait to drive rush in. Paladin caught on to this and started implementing OD shoryuken to counter him, but its not the optimal play. The optimal play would be to just fight the fireball war and/or parry while walking in or block while walking in. Nothing fancy needs to be done here. Ryu just needs to close the gap as safely as possible and punish him for spamming all of those sonic booms. If paladin could connect a couple combos for every other time guile threw a sonic boom then it doesnt matter if ryu has drive meter or not. The inevitable truth is that GUILE is the one who doesnt have a lot of other plans to deal with ryu. Not the other way around. Thats why you see him doing the same thing over and over again. If ryu wins the fireball war then guile literally has nothing else to follow up with. ryu has an overhead, he should have used it more too. And the Heavy Tornado Kick can bypass projectiles. Heres a good example. Endingwalker vs another Legend rank Guile. Its a best of 5. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJ7Nk6p5gamMga8si=wDY9x7CVPz21FwJq

It wouldn’t “stop spamming” though. Backing off means getting walked to the corner and even if you manage to get a denjin charge it only lasts for one fireball, won’t beat Guile’s Vskill (whatever the spinning Sonic Boom disc in front of him is called), and if you hit with it you get a knockdown. A knockdown is good for getting in on the opponent, but if your game plan is to back off and charge denjin again you’re just going to lose all of that screen space.

Say you play from a distance full on fireballs... your drive will deplete first that's just how it is. Guille can use sonic blade 2 hits non stop and you either jump block match with hadouken or parry you can jump forever and pray that he does not punish you, and if he attacks as you saw in the video he has lots of tools. If you parry and it's not perfect he can drive rush closing the distance... if you block you lose drive gauge, if you match with your fireball you have to spend 2 drive bars to even match his sonicblade... in the end you'll run out of drive and he will go on the offensive. So, even if you walk back and play from a distance Guille will win that game and once your drive is low or you run out of stage he will corner you and you will lose.

I def feel like this is more a showing of how good guile is with default play, there are plenty of characters he stomps on just by managing space and they can’t do anything about it, ryu might not have all the tools but he surely isn’t bad; it’s just a matter of the individual player and ofc the match up

This is a great video. Clearly capcom did a disservice to their poster boy. Isn’t Ryu like a world warrior champion? Shouldn’t he have the edge over everybody? You know, like Messi or Mj or Gretzky?

If that was the case then it wouldn't make sense to play anyone but Ryu for tournaments. It would actually render the entire game pointless to play for tournaments.

Oh and btw they want Luke to be the new poster boy. Capcom for some reason and for a while does not want Ryu to be a top tier char... season 1 sf5, sf4 vanilla, those are his strongest versions to date.

@@mdz_jimmy Ryu in my mind is the legacy character of the franchise but i get the feeling that Capcom just didn’t get creative enough with his arsenal. So much so that(in my opinion) his a little underwhelming at times(middle of the pack). This was one of those deep analysis where it’s evident the character is outmatched and outclassed. I also feel confused about Paladin (Ryu) outplayed Punk(Cammy). Then Nuckledu (Guile) outplayed Paladin (Ryu). But then Nuckledu(Cammy) squeezed by Bananaken(JP). I guess it boils down to the matchup of characters.

I’m no where near these guys on the game but so far I’ve won the Guile/Ryu matchup as Ryu on all levels to this point. Just a couple of stars away from master. First… I think you have to be willing to throw out a couple of tatsu’s and take the punish just to show the guile player that it’s a possibility if he carelessly throws booms. It will cause him to pause just a bit. Also, Ryu has the 4th best fireball in the game and he has the luxury of not having to charge. You can pretty much “out guile” Guile by using fireballs and DP’s the way he uses boons and flash kicks if you can bait him into going aggressive. One last thing, Guile HAS to fight one way at a time no matter how great he is. If he is aggressive and attacking, you have just taken his booms and Flash kick away (other than combo Enders). If he is throwing booms and waiting for a jump in… he can’t fight you aggressively. It also backs him up over time. Use this to walk him to the corner. Once he gets close he will try to regain space by getting aggressive and walking forward. Now you have disarmed his booms and flash kick. He’s still a ton to handle, but Ryu’s strength comes from being versatile and seamlessly going aggressive to defensive without sacrificing anything.

You understand that guile wins the fireball war against Ryu all the time right. Ain’t no way someone is gonna throw out random tatsu and get punish countered for it. Ryu has to always play Guile’s game no matter what and any competent Guile will know that.
@Groovingonem
@Groovingonem 11 ай бұрын
@@Omnislasher5of course, however at the end of the day he is a charge character and he has to always give something up to do the other. What I’m speaking to is strategy. If Guile is throwing booms and flash kicks he can’t rush you down. If he rushes you down he can’t throw booms and flash kicks (other than combo enders) as a Ryu player your strength is versatility. Your Job against guile is to get in, speed him up and force him to play aggressively. Doing that takes away his booms and flash kicks and now because he is coming towards you he can’t do them and it allows RYU to now throw fireballs and DP’s. Yes, a great guile player will see this and settle in, but in that 5 seconds it takes him to realize what’s happening…. Ryu in this game can land a combo with a level 3 and wipe out 65% of your health. I’m just saying there is a best approach to guile. You still may lose but forcing him into aggressive play gives you the best opportunity. The fireball game is just one piece to it. Ryu’s fireball is just good enough to not get killed from only booms. The Tatsu throw out is just to make the guile player aware of the fact that if he mistimes a boom he could get clipped and knocked down. That is a mental thing. The game within the game.
@Omnislasher5
@Omnislasher5 11 ай бұрын
@@Groovingonem “force him to play aggressively” that’s the problem you can’t force Guile to play aggressive because Guile is in control throughout the match as seen in the video. Even when Ryu did get in 1 mistake and he is either mid screen or full screen against guile which is a terrible position to be in. Like Jimmy said in the video Ryu can’t deal with Guile’s zoning, sure he can try to contest it with hadouken but guile has always had a better fireball than Ryu in every street fighter. Also the tastsu is weird because you can’t react to boom with how fast it is and tatsu is punish counterable which guile does a lot of damage which is particularly why you don’t see many Ryu’s using the move in neutral in the first place.
@Groovingonem
@Groovingonem 11 ай бұрын
@@Omnislasher5 i haven’t had any trouble with forcing him to get aggressive although I’m not a pro level guy. I understand that they are playing at and against a different level that doesn’t apply to most of us Master and Diamond players. The tatsu is just a mental move you do in a set to say “you aren’t just gonna throw booms without any potential danger.” You more than likely get punished one time for it, but now the Guile player has to factor that in while playing you. The way I force it is that I walk forward and Parry his booms. I get close and as he is throwing booms he is going backwards a bit. If you do it in a subtle way he actually will back himself into the corner and that’s what forces the aggressive play. You’ve kind of herded him into it. As far as the fireball matchup Ryu has historically won it up to the point that they changed Guile’s Sonic boom from a 2 second charge to a one second one. From Street fighter 2 - SF4 Ryu does well in the fireball war against Guile. Recently not so much though. The best SF6 player currently has a great Guile breakdown. I’ll send the link to you. He’s a Ken guy so he can obviously compete better against Guile in this game but the concept is the same.
