In 2022 Vladimir Putin amended Russia’s Criminal Code, making it nearly impossible to leave the army. Deserters face 15 years behind bars. But according to human right activists, at least 500 men have deserted from the Russian army since then. Ukraine has a program called I Want to Live for Russian soldiers who don’t want fight. There is a form online they can fill out and arrangements will be made to be taken into Ukraine.

Not having conscription is a luxury that not all have, example being Finland. Geography dictated that there simply would not be chance to defend the nation with small and minute professional army, leaving only the conscription service as the only viable deterrent against russia. The service is a good reminder for the yearly tens of thousands who go into service of the price the soldiers in WW2 had to pay for the current generations. So, one should not condemn *ALL* conscription systems based on what russia or China is doing. Some have quite good systems with popular support over the decades.

I hope they give preference to all the returning soldiers over those who didn't fight, without a valid reason, in terms of opportunities.
