Brecker completely blows liebman and Lovano away for me. Sound, approach technique and most importantly his time is perfect! A true master.

Perfect time is useless compared to commanding time. Joe commands time. Far more swinging.

Music is not competition, so I don’t want to say who is the winner. But if I really had to say, I would say Billy the one.

All of the Brecker idolatry in the comments … A great player but not some god, and he would have balked at all the he’s the best BS. He was a super humble dude who recognized that he was one among many great players, as fully talented as he.

@@Robjoe757 I call BS. Better than Trane, Rollins, Joe Henderson, Coleman Hawkins, George Garzone, Bird, etc? To rank one player the best is to not recognize the importance of VARIETY. Music isn’t some sport that people win. I promise you, Brecker would be embarrassed and baffled by such an assertion. And I would argue that Gonz is at least on par with MB … but both owe tremendously to their predecessors.
@davidsudak51144 ай бұрын
@@Robjoe757 yes, we are sharing opinions. Mine is that I see no need to crown any musician “the best.” Are you actually arguing that MB has had a bigger influence than Rollins/Trane/Hawkins/Bird? What would objectively measure this? Don’t get me wrong, I admire Brecker and his playing, but he didn’t innovate a style like his predecessors. I would even argue that his playing was more predictable and less surprising than many other players. He was perhaps as technically proficient, but no more innovative or creative.
@davidsudak51144 ай бұрын
@@Robjoe757 I don’t agree that he created a new way of playing. He was part of a movement that included Steve Grossman, Bob Berg, Dave Liebman, Joe Farrell, Bob Mintzer, and the aforementioned Bergonzi. I think those who deem Brecker as the greatest saxophonist of all time likely favor technique over creative/artistic output. If we are talking about the latter, I would say he lags far behind any number of players. Just think about all the great records, compositions included, put out by the likes of a Charles Lloyd or a Joe Lovano or a Steve Lacy. I’m not saying Brecker didn’t put out some good records, but he didn’t put out many great ones.

Fully agree. That muscular, bravado approach is just a small piece of the puzzle. Plus: would there even be a MB without preceding influences like Joe Henderson??
