A technically easy but scenically impressive panoramic tour in the Cristallo group.
Start: Rifugio Son Forca (2,213 m), top station of the lift (free parking at Rifugio Rio Gere)
End point: Parking lot at Rifugio Rio Gere (1,680 m)
Total length: 13.8 km
Altitude meters: Ascent 1186 m, descent 1716 m
Duration: approx. 8-9 hours
The tour starts at the Rifugio Son Forca (2,213 m), which can be reached either on foot or by chairlift.
The route then climbs up steep and gravelly paths to Forcella Staunies (2,916 m), the first challenging section of the tour. The lift there was closed in 2016, as was the Rifugio Lorenzi at the top of the saddle. As soon as you reach this, you will find the start of the Via Ferrata Ivano Dibona to the left of the saddle. It is worth taking a short break beforehand to enjoy the view of the surrounding Dolomite peaks, all the way to the Three Peaks.
The Via Ferrata Ivano Dibona is one of the most famous and historic via ferratas in the Dolomites, made famous by the scene in the movie “Cliffhanger” with Sylvester Stallone. The via ferrata follows an old war route from the First World War.
After the start, the route leads over the first spectacular section: a 30-metre-long suspension bridge that spans a deep gorge at lofty heights. This is where the heart of the via ferrata begins. To the left, a detour to the Cristallino D'Ampezzo at 3008m is worthwhile.
The route then follows a sometimes very exposed but always well-secured ridge. There are numerous airy passages, ladders and steel cables that offer fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.
Along the way, you pass several historical relics from the First World War, including old trenches and positions, as well as the bivacco in the Forcella Padeon, where a command post of the Italian troops was located during the First World War.
After the long via ferrata route, you reach the Forcella Alta. If you want to walk the entire via ferrata, you can continue to the Ospitale, but this makes the tour several hours longer.
Instead, this is where the descent begins for us, which is initially steep and partly rocky, then includes a few more climbing sections over higher rocks with several wire ropes before it turns into a marked hiking trail. If you are early, you may still get the lift, otherwise there is another 3.5 km descent, partly along the farm track.
