People often think bad posture comes from the neck and shoulder area, but it can also come from the upper back or even the hips. Tightness and weakness can contribute to it. Here's a whole body approach that may help improve posture. More posture exercises: • Improve Posture with 5...
The first posture-improving move is a chin tuck series. Regular chin tucks help reset the neck muscles, and when strengthening the deep flexor muscles is added, it really helps with posture improvements.
Next, lying down on the stomach in prone is a great way to work the upper back muscles.
Then, standing up, a chest or pec stretch helps open up the chest area to prevent forward shoulder rolling.
Strengthening the upper back muscles with a resistive band can also be a great way to help keep the body in an upright position. Standing rows and face pulls with a shoulder external rotation are excellent ways to help strengthen the upper back.
Finally, the hip area can cause posture problems as well. So strengthening the hip flexors and stretching the hamstrings can help get the pelvis and hips back into a neutral position to help keep the body upright.

Great video as always Dr. Jo! I've been fighting whole body strength imbalance and flexibility issues since having surgery to repair a torn quad tendon a few years ago (I was in pretty bad shape when it happened) and your videos have really helped me. For the longest time, even the most minor things caused me great pain and your gentle approach and encouraging words have been a godsend. Thank you so much.

I have that forward posture issue. I also scoliosis and kyphosis which probably doesn't help much. With my forward facing shoulders I feel I'm not doing face and I feel my biceps tendon aching quite badly.

Posture is really a reflection of our movement patterns which are influenced by our lifestyle. Although there is a genetic factor, environmental factors have a larger impact, which we can change. As to how you got your current posture, I encourage you to look at your daily activities and see how any of your activities are associated with your posture. use of phones, tablet, pc, tv, reading, etc. If you can start to change how you engage in those activities, then you start to move and use your bodies differently, which can change your posture over time.

Wow, Dr. Jo I feel you really are reaching out to me. I have to really work on my thoracic area like you mentioned. I am guilty of all theses areas. You mentioned different color bands have different strengths. I was given a green band from my Ortho team, which strength does it have? Your video will be really helpful to me. 💗
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on what brand the band is (often different brands have different colors for the resistance). If it's Theraband brand, green is the 3rd from lightest (yellow, red, green).
@1018Stacey
@1018Stacey 4 жыл бұрын
Dr. Jo, I just checked mine is a Theraband and it's green. My Ortho team gave it to me last year to strengthen my left wrist with tendonitis after I broke my Ulna and my Radius in Feb. 2018. When you mention that the green is third in line, it's the heaviest for strengthening.
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 4 жыл бұрын
It's not the heaviest. There are several after green (I just mentioned the ones before, so you would know it was the third), but it might be too much to start with if you haven't done the movements before. If you decide to use it, definitely start with just a few reps.

Dr. Jo, in you video you mentioned that you could anchor the therapy band to the wall so you could do rows, so you could stretch out your area in the shoulder blades. What should I anchor the band to?
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 4 жыл бұрын
Anything sturdy. A hook, in a door, around a post, or table leg. Just make sure it's secure.
