In this video i talk through my editing process for my black and white photography, specifically street photography.
Apologies for the delay getting this video out guys. I felt that i was still very much developing my style too and wanted to share my tips and workflow once i felt it more useful..
This video is to help you improve your photography, 50% of your photography is down to your post processing.
Over the past few years I have concluded that the less editing you do to and image the better. A huge improvement will also come when you choose to shoot with black and white photography in mind as the end result.
I hope you find this video helpful, i tried to make it multibrand friendly instead of using my normal Fujifilm Acros+R profile.

Really excellent video Gareth. Cracking photos. Makes me laugh how some people want to lift shadows and drop highlights all the time, doesn't seem to occur to them they're actually reducing the dynamic range within their photos, and shadows really do exist in real life! Hope you're doing ok with the lockdown? Picking up lots of little PS tips from watching you work, thanks mate much appreciated. cheers, tony

Hi Gareth you might like to try using the saturation sliders in the Calibration section of LR, they give you greater selective control compared to the Temp slider. Your editing technique is very quick to obtain your distinctive look. Another 👍🏻s from me.

Thanks Gareth, I found it really useful indeed & it’s reassuring to hear you say “don’t spend too long editing” because sometimes I get caught in a trap of thinking I don’t spend long enough if I’m editing in less than 2 minutes!

Nice clear tutorial, although I don't use lightroom I do do something you did at 14.25 in PS. I go to Adjust Hue/Saturation, desaturate all six colours individually down to -100 and then move the lightness slider up and down for each colour (its like working in channels but simpler and with more control) to suit your mood. Been doing this for a couple of years now and haven't found a simpler method of fine controlling tone in b&w. Hope you're keeping well and the government are being kind to you in this crisis.
@GarethDanks

Hey thanks for the comment Iain! glad you enjoyed it mate! are you a capture user then? or just PS?
@iainmc9859
@iainmc9859 4 жыл бұрын
Just PS, never really seen the need to have both a horse and a bullock to pull the cart. I'd probably invest in capture if I was running a studio, just for ease of tethering. I also tend to use 'Virtual Photographer' from Optiverve Labs (free plug in to PS) for some quick layer adjustments, plus you can design your own adjustments and save them. I'm not really a multiple layer editor (I can't be arsed naming them). I always look for the most versatile easiest shortcut to regular edit requirements. A lot of what's on You Tube are overly complicated ways to get to the same place...too many masks is the usual. Try the desaturate each colour and lightness slider method, quick and effective for bringing out what you want the viewer to see with b&w's without the need to dodge and burn most of the time :-)
@GarethDanks

Hey thanks mate. I look forward to your comments. Lightroom is far far faster for editing multiple images in one go. Else I’d just use ps if it was a single image I wanted to edit. As in the video I can edit multiple images in one go. I need to try capture tho. Better for fujifilm files. 👍🏻😊

Hi Dennis thanks for your comment. Yes you’re right I didn’t mean to I completely forgot really sorry. I think I would’ve use the pen again and use the patch tool to clone information over. Would’ve definitely had to use the history brush and duplicate the background layer though. I think it will be okay because it was dark area. Thanks for the comment mate appreciate you watching

@GarethDanks
@GarethDanks 4 жыл бұрын
Hey andy. Good question mate. Reason is when you edit and adjust contrast it changes the balance on the image. So until you’ve got a basic edit you can’t really see how it’s going to look. Tones and shape might appear after edit that you’ve cropped off. If that makes sense. 👍🏻😊
