Hi Angus, an observation and a question on contact surface area and adhesion pre-checks... @4:47 - Just for interest I did some rough calculations on the surface area difference between the 2 egg parts. The larger annulus is ~ 18.37 while the bottom of the other half is ~ 28.27, so the larger (disc) footprint is 64% of the area of the smaller disc (I assume units are mm). Now the question, even though the contact area is smaller, would not the larger diameter compensate in terms of stability (not necessary adhesion) to the work surface? The reason I ask is that I typically use a blue-tape surface and I notice the plastic-to-tape-adhesion is pretty good. The weakness at that point is the adhesion of the tape to the aluminum heated bed. This effect is _worse_ when the contact area is smaller in diameter. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Thanks for the Masterclass info, great stuff as always. - Eddy

A comment from the future, you can easily test tricky parts that needs support or tight tolerances, by dragging the model in z and also cutting everything else (like the back of the thinker here) in Prusaslicer with the cut tool, or in Cura by adding some modifier (if I remember correctly). That way the test is as fast an focused as possible. I did that with a small transformer PIP to get the xy compensation neither overly loose or that melted together the parts.
@umbratherios56144 жыл бұрын
cura also has custom supports :) people don't seem to realize that, lol, but damn this video is a treasure trove of tips!

Great video! But I have two questions. Is there a chance of pulling off the entire bottom layer when removing a brim and how do you stop rafts fusing to the part? I have had that happen multiple times. Thanks!
@lsellclumanetsolarenergyll50714 жыл бұрын
Ok you should had also touched STL files itself for a good success. Not always you need to do build supports up like you did in your slicer. Sometimes it's best you build them into your STL right from the start to eliminate failures and wasting a lot of support material. Like take a drawer which has a drawer handle attached. You can put a support under it for 25mm in a bigger area or you can put into your STL file a 45 degree support build material which comes up from the face where the handle is attacked to and build the support up in mid air by just using a 0.2mm support line. So sometimes you do need to think out of the box to support your print's proper, because also the Support functions of slicers often attach to hard to the piece you printing. Keep up the good work.

here's a tip, Since you can't put a brim on support you can try importing a square or circle, scaling it to only 1 layer tall and then placing that under your support column. You have to turn support separation layers below part to 0 but this will make tall support columns much more stable.

Just watched this video after 3 years of printing. Wish I had seen it sooner for one reason. I use S3D and my supports are just one rough zigzag all the way to the actual print. I noticed yours get denser just before the print. How do you make it do this? Fortunately what I have been printing the most does not have much for overhangs. I try to avoid them in my designs but plan on venturing out more and see that this would be so much better when I do need supports but don't want the density all the way up. Thanks.

Could you put it in tinkercad first and stick a block with a larger surface area below the head/hands that's separate from the base so the supports get built on top of it and join the block to the base with a brim? I don't have simplify 3d (yet) so am curious.

When adding a "Brim", have you learned that you need some sort of percentage of the surface space of the whole model or just a line or so per cm high?
