Improve Your Door-to-Door Sales Pitch
www.d2dmillion...
The initial approach in door-to-door sales can either make or break you, so this post we cover some tips on how to improve your door-to-door sales pitch.
Should your door-to-door sales pitch be scripted?
If you are just starting out in door-to-door sales, it’s probably good to have a script that you follow, but the sooner you can make it more of a guideline the better. You are going to want to have certain steps in place when you go though your door-to-door sales pitch, but if you come off like a robot that’s a bad thing.
Not only can following an exact script and being robotic be bad because your potential customer can tell, but it can also reinforce bad habits. We’ve all heard that practice makes perfect, but it also makes permanent.
All too often, door-to-door sales reps that are struggling, continue to say the same door-to-door sales pitch even if it isn’t working. Instead of correcting the problem of their sales pitch, they instead look to blame others.
“It’s the company’s fault.” “This is a bad neighborhood.” “The people in this city don’t like our products.” and on the excuses roll. If you routinely are getting poor results selling door to door, it might be time to look in the mirror and at your door-to-door sales pitch as a start.
Focus on an effective initial approach and sales pitch
The first 45 seconds of your approach with a new potential customer can make or break your sale. Potential customers should feel as if what you are communicating to them is something you are passionate about not just reading from a note card like a telemarketer.
Creating habits are natural for humans, so often as door-to-door sales reps you will need to focus and put a bit more effort into your door-to-door sales pitch to keep it fresh. It would be optimal to have a new icebreaker that is unique to each potential customers.
It might take some time to get the hang of this skill, but make a game out of it, by trying a new initial ice breaker with each potential customer and see how many you can do in a row. This will help you become more observant to the situation to come up with something unique each time.
Having a unique ice breaker will build rapport with your potential customer much faster than a canned generic ice breaker will. Your goal is to appear as a messenger of good news and throwing in some variety with each potential customer can help with that.
4 things to cover in your door-to-door sales pitch
Having each sales pitch you go through unique doesn’t have to be as hard as it sounds. You may switch up parts of your door-to-door sales pitch, but you should still have the same foundational elements each time to be most effective.
After your ice breaker you’ll want to transition to the first step of your sales pitch, which is stating who you are. You can make this unique as well. For example you might say “Hey I’m Tom with Nice Lawn Care, you know the guys who keep your grass green?” or “Hey I’m Tom with Nice Lawn Care, we mow it, so you don’t have to.”
Whatever you say, just be sure to include your name and the company you work for.
From that point you’ll want to move on to the next step of your door-to-door sales pitch, which is why are you there. Answer this question for your potential customer as fast as you can, because we all know they are thinking it.
Ideally at this point you can name-drop and let your potential customer know about some kind of limited-time special offer you have available while you are in the neighborhood. Doing this also accomplishes the next step of your sales pitch of letting your potential customer know what you are offering.
Finally, you’ll want to transition into a conversational close and ask some sort of closing question to help you gather more information about your potential customer. This can help you learn if your potential customer qualifies for your time or not.
Some samples of question are: “How many square feet is your home?”, “How long have you lived in the home?”, and “Are you the original owners or have you moved in recently?”
When you customize your door-to-door sales pitch to your potential customer and follow the proven sales process for door-to-door sales, your results will start to skyrocket!

Appreciate the info. 3rd week in D2D sales & I gotta say this is one of my weaknesses. Getting stuck in a robot type pattern. When it comes to the Ice breaker I struggle because I'm afraid I will forget my pitch. smh

I'm with you. 3rd week D2D.. and I find myself focusing so hard on what I need to say that I am not natural. Drill, drill, drill until we understand the pitch to the extent that it becomes a helpful conversation instead of a pitch.

Having just had an unpleasant encounter with someone coming to my door trying to sell me something I neither needed nor wanted and who would not take no for an answer, please allow me to offer the following advice: If you come to my property with the attitude that I owe you the opportunity to make your pitch whether I want to hear it or not, you are going to piss me off. Be careful with the " ice breaker". If someone asks me if I am the "king/queen of the castle" I might be tempted to say "are you the dirty rascal?" I appreciate that times are hard and people need to earn a living, but too often door to door sales people prey on the vulnerable, the elderly and the good natured. If you are trying to make an honest living from door to door selling, firstly you ought to have a produce worth selling. Secondly when a customer indicates that they are not interested, bid them gooday and don't waste their time or your own.

Ralph Brooks sometimes people say they aren’t interested just to get us out of the door. Sometimes direct sales representatives (Dsr’s) knock several doors without making any contact, which can kinda be a bummer. So when they get that contact, they want to hold a conversation and build trust with you and try not to take no for an answer. There’s a fine line of asking why you don’t want our services and finding out exactly what the issue may be and just pushing out sale offers and constantly getting no’s. Several people who arent interested don’t even know what they’re turning away half the time so we like to try and ask questions pertaining the competitors or why you generally don’t want our services. If the right questions are asked, we can try to use that info to create value and help you out in whatever your issues may be with who you have. I’m mainly coming from cable, not sure what the person was trying to sell you though. A lot of the time with cable, people are paying way more than they should be, but are stuck in their ways of using a lesser quality service that costs more.

I never buy anything from a person at the door, all salespeople rely on you to engage so they can make a sale. A video doorbell is invaluable as you don’t have to be home and they can’t do much but walk away empty handed.

I've sold and I know people on my team that have sold over the doorbell before. The sad news with people that have your mentality is you believe that you'll just go out and buy everything that you need or just order it online. The reality is door to door sales has been around for a long long time and it's going to continue to be around for a long long time because it's effective. A lot of times door-to-door people can have a little more flexibility on pricing and some additional perks for the homeowner that you won't get if you just go ahead and place an order online.

@ I only buy things from those I trust, if I need to buy something then I ensure it will suit my needs. A salesman is on commission and will try to persuade you that you need something else instead. Salesmen have targets to hit in order to get their commission and save their job. If I want something specific I go to the manufacturer or their approved supplier as that way you know you are getting a genuine product instead of cheap fakes that only result in disappointment.

@markomarten well it's hard to create cheap fakes of services like internet or pest control and metal roofing shingles and stuff like that. I'm glad you have it all figured out.

If sales people were looking for lay downs we'd be miserable and we wouldn't be doing sales anymore. Just because you don't want to hear what people have to say doesn't mean that we're bad. If someone doesn't have a company ID or company equipment with company only accessed applications then by all means just don't answer but to act like we're all just leeches is ignorant.

@@scottyhaines4226 Hi Scotty, I chose my words carefully, and I don't think I said or even implied that sales people are all bad. However, responsible sales people should be aware that there are rogues who do come door to door and prey on people, some of whom can be a nuisance at best and one occasions intimidating. I have had that experience on more than one occasion. So why should I give my trust or my time to someone who comes to my door unbidden. The person whom I encountered shortly before I posted my comments, got quite arsey (British expression meaning being argumentative with attitude) with me when I immediately told him I was not interested , before he had launched into his pitch. He accused me of "denying him freedom of speech". In my view that shows a bizarre misunderstanding of his rights and mine. I don't want to disparage anyone, or get into an argument with some stranger on my own doorstep. I would welcome any advice from a professional and experienced sales person on the best way to get someone to simply go and leave me alone, without causing any offence nor upset either them or to me. When I say no, I mean no. It might also mean I'm busy or don't have time or energy for this right now. I think it shows some disrespect to question that or not accept it, and I find it very tiresome. Perhaps you think that is ignorant of me?

@@ralphbrooks2132 Thanks for the tips sir i appreciate that, I will be going out in the morning and selling my service of cleaning out the gutters. Never would i be pushy or pompous about the sale. Also i thought your response was well said. People are very sensitive now a days and can't read so they read a sentence and interpret what you "meant" to say lol. Keep on keeping on Mr. Brooks btw you make a great shoe!;)
