Congratulations to everyone for what you do. Since I am particularly interested in English pronunciation (British English) I would like to understand the sound more. Then I would like to ask you about the word OFTEN because many people(including teachers) say that it is pronounced OFFEN and that the letter T it's not pronounced because it's silent. What can you tell me about it? I also wanted to clarify I heard people( actually a minority) say that word Often, so it's a bit confusing...Thanks
@Oxfordonlineenglish13 жыл бұрын
Hi there. We're glad you enjoy the lessons. Some native speakers pronounce the 't' in often, and others do not. Both are acceptable and common.

@Oxfordonlineenglish14 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for watching! In the word 'bus' we have the short /u/ sound. It sounds like: bŭs. In the word 'driver' we have the schwa sound for the 'er' ending. It sounds like: drī′vər. For more practice on the schwa sound, we have a lesson here: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/schwa-sound.

Great video...For me,I find it difficult to discriminate between these vowels in these two words "cat" and "cut " .It is a bit easier in American pronunciation because the first is pronononced a bit longer than in British English . In addition,it seems to me as if it is changing from one word to another and native speakers themselves pronounce it differently ..this confuses me a lot .Thank you .
@Oxfordonlineenglish15 жыл бұрын
Yes, those can be tricky! With more listening and speaking practice it can become easier to tell the difference. Thanks for watching!

This is a bit confusing. Would've been better if you guys simply did an overview of each of the vowel sounds. 'Cause now we have to basically roll the dice whenever we want to say something. So, it's either in BrE or in AmE.

Thanks for sharing the comment, Daniel. Yes it can certainly be a bit confusing. It's something that takes practice, both in speaking and listening!

It depends on the situation and context for example - I can't stand him singing Here in this I am talking about the person himself I am explaining my feelings about his singing that I won't listen to him singing again - I can't stand his singing I am explaining his singing as not good that means I ain't like his singing ( as a possession objective ) Do you understand What I man!?
