@@richbrownbass I had been there a handful of times, and I think I saw you backing a couple different musicians/combos each time. No matter what was going on, I remember you being a real standout and you'd really drawn my ear into the mix. I'm still a jazz neophyte, but I do believe the 3 or so times I'd seen you had sensibly schooled me. I wish you many more occasions to impress and edify.

Can ghost notes emulate the sound of a slapped upright bass? I am thinking rockabilly..
@ConcordNkabindeSoweto3 жыл бұрын
This was truly awesome and eye opening. I have always played my ghost notes on the same string as the plugged notes. I hadn’t really thought about it until now. I have now been trying to play ghost notes on the next higher string and not only has it allowed more room for the plugged note to sing without competition, but also frequency-wise, if the ghost is from a higher string, the whole playing breathes much better. Thank you for this. Blessings.

Thanks Rich, your videos are always great! I've been needing to work on my ghost notes for a while and i've looked for videos but most of them consist of "this is a ghost note, lets play some" but never get into the "simple" things and you always take the time to look at the intricacies of how things work. You always manage to take things down to a basic level but always keep it interesting. Articulation are one of the big things that really ups your bass playing game!

As always, Great Lesson! Rich, would you do a lesson on getting a good sound? Some of us go through the exercises but our sound can be a little shaky or not consistent from note to note. I feel it's paramount in finding your own signature sound and tone, especially those who play five string. Please and thank you!

Thanks for the lesson. After taking time to correct my bad habits and knocking the rust off, I went to learn a "reach" song, Rock Steady by Aretha Franklin. And as soon as I started listening to it, I was like "I don't... do that". Too much left brain. So I've got tot practice until it's automatic.

Very cool lesson to go back to basics and improve your technique. Mr Brown, to answer your question, I have always intuitively played my ghost notes on the same string. It feels much more comfortable this way for me. I also thought it had to be played on the same string! I will practice what you showed in your lesson and see if I can first break a long time habit and improve. Thank you

Thanks again Rich!! This is gold. I would like to ask you about muting bass strings. I 've seen you do a video with Aguilar called "Aguilar artist Rich brown plays Twice" I saw you didn't use your right hand mute the lower strings when you re soloing .I can't figure out how you mute those strings and they don't ringing out or do you have any techniques that I might haven't noticed. Thanks you
@richbrownbass3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tul. I have to be honest. I still have trouble muting the strings, especially when I play 6-string. I've tried to use the 'floating thumb' technique, but it's just not for me. I finally relented and bought a couple of fret wraps. If you are interested, you should probably find lessons on the floating thumb technique. I think Todd Johnson has a great videos all about it. I wish I could be more help. 😒
@stephenshoihet25902 жыл бұрын
@@richbrownbass that's actually cool to hear you acknowledge that you struggle with it on 6 string. I think it was your modes video i was watching and i remember thinking "he's a little messy with his muting"... but it just make you feel more relatable when everything isn't always perfect. :-) I found floating thumb to be pretty natural to me, i only intentionally use it on 5 string and i sometimes have to stop myself from using it on 4 string when i don't mean to. I've never tried 6 string. which bass are you most comfortable with and which do you enjoy most? I love hearing you play the 6.

I'll definitely like and sub for this. I instructed for a few years and the one thing I could never feel right about was the pace, kids/parents pay a lot for 30 minutes of rushed examples and they never get the time necessary to absorb what they just consumed (or tried to). Even in this media of on-demand video most instructors feel rushed and split brained, you don't. You obviously appreciate that it's never teaching, you can't force anything into anyone's brain, you can just put it there on the table and allow them the opportunity to pick it up as you oversee that process and control the flow of more offerings. That's real, that's attentive, that's concern and that sh t takes time :P No need to have a Mr. Rogers or Bob Ross vibe about you but once you get their pace down, that magical flow rate that consciousness runs best at... that's when it starts working - on both ends, sending and receiving, zen-communicado.
@richbrownbass2 жыл бұрын
First of all, my friend. The JB reference in your name wins for me. Secondly, I truly appreciate the kind words AND the sub. Both mean a lot. It might sound corny, but there's magic in music. It's not easy to teach that magic. I'm not entirely sure if it can be taught, but I genuinely love music and feel fortunate to make my living as a musician. I think when you see that genuine emotion in an artist, it becomes infectious. Maybe that's part of the magic?

@@richbrownbass Right on. Right on. There's only one place it could all have come from and only one place it can all go, yet so many flirt with thinking we might not all be God in the flesh with all that ability at our fingertips (however intermittently). In a word, magic works, though. You're the first person to recognize where my nic here comes from. I got a second email of talknloud, had it now for probably 25 years, still no one gets it. They're all like ''But you ain't loud'' >.< Guess I'm mailing the wrong folks. I just gotta keep keep'n on and let the slow pokies poke how ever long they need to poke. I think sometimes a big part of why we rhyme with tones and words in artistic forms is because if we had to spell it all out every time we'd get frustrated and start slapping all the pokies which would just be like punching holes in an ocean expecting it to not fill back in. Mom always said ''Music, if nothing else, will always be there for stress relief and to help guide you back to the happy, keep your heart free''. What else could we want in life, for everyone? Magical, indeed.

Any and all advice on ghost notes is appreciated. I have always found them difficult to do. I have a mild case of essential tremors so sometimes I get the timing off or, a harmonic will ring out more often than not. Never did it occur to me to simplify it to this. This is a perfect exercise to do on the couch while watching the TV with the wife in addition to 5 or 10 minutes while warming up.
