..Useful and eye opening lessons, especially the cadence concept. Thank you

This man is like the Bob Ross/Mr. Rogers of jazz theory, so relaxing and educational 😂 The bad jokes are my favorite, haha!

Good discussion and tips. I've played guitar for decades, and yet my "lines" still tend to end if not with the bar, then certainly the chord. At first, I thought it was because I was a harmonic rather than melodic improvisor, but then I realized that my phrases just sound too choppy. The funny thing is, back when I was playing trombone, I didn't do this.

These lessons are great. I’ve picked up some valuable tips from all of them so far. I like the analogy of speaking in sentences rather than cryptic or disconnected phrases. It says it all.

thanks I'll have to work on that for 45 yrs i was always getting to change when the chord did and this might make me lines flow better,

I'm working on this too. If I may: I find practicing with a metronome set at a very slow beat helps for flow and then gradually increase speed as you progress. I know you probably know this, but I find being reminded of the obvious sometimes helps for the very reason it is obvious sometimes we forget. Anyway there's my unsolicited opinion. Take care!

What strings would you recommend for my Ibanez AK85-DVS for jazz? I cant make up my mind. Thanks
@RichieZellon4 жыл бұрын
Strings are a very personal matter. Listen to the players you like and the tone they get and find out what they use. Also you have to experiment with what gauge you are comfortable with and if you like roundwound or flatwound better. As far as general string quality goes, I like Thomastik. Personally, I had to experiment until I found the combination that gave me the sound I wanted and the gauge I felt comfortable with.

Richie, please elaborate on the standard jazz progressions. I get the ii - V, but there is much more, of course. Isn't the ii - V the minor 7 to Major 7? Or is it Dominant 7? Does the I resolve to Dominant 7?
@plopzoppers39215 жыл бұрын
ii-V is minor ii to dominant V. in the key of C it would be Dminor7 to GDominant7 (dm7-G7). dominant chords are nearly major chords but with a minor 7th instead of a major 7th. it would typically resolve to the I chord like Cmajor7 if in the key of C.

Excellent, as always. Jazz is strange to me, as a blueser. Seems very much chromatic, rather than diatonic, but sounds great.

Crypto Tharg to me, Dorian is the link between blues and jazz.

Blues can use jazz and vice versa. Harmonically speaking though, many jazz standards use advanced chord extensions you may not hear in many other types of music.

Great playing but too much talking without demonstrating HOW TO PRACTICE PLAYING OVER THE BAR LINE.
@RichieZellon2 ай бұрын
I always listen to constructive criticism and use it to make better lessons. To be objective, I also run it by several students when unsure. However, in this case I believe you truly didn't watch the video or didn't understand any of the demonstrations because there are definitely plenty of them (from the moment I start playing) and all the talking is relevant to the subject. Read some of the other comments.
