Great insights, thanks, Layne. At 5:08, the lady wisely asked why glazing to change color instead of simply painting with the correct color from the beginning. Besides your textures answer, I believe these two points could be added: 1) Despite our best efforts, it's often difficult to match the exact color on the first try, requiring subtle and incremental adjustments to achieve the desired hue. 2) When multiple colors interact on a canvas, glazing can help organize the color harmonies without affecting the overall composition.

Both are excellent points. When I'm painting, I try not to stop and perfect things, knowing I can do that at the later stages of adjustment. Get it close then move on. One of the reasons so many people don't finish paintings is they get hung up trying to perfect an element instead of seeing the whole. It's kind of like in writing - don't get hung up editing in the middle of a first draft. Know what I mean?

GRAZIE. Perfetto il suggerimento di usarlo solo alla fine (anche sei io lo uso un po anche nella pittura di fondo. E' un peccato veniale?). Ma prevalentemente lo uso alla fine per dare delle velature all'acqua del mare.

You're very welcome! I'd say it's not a huge deal in the beginning but I generally don't create a detailed underpainting. Just watch the Fat over Lean rule. 🙏

This is an oil paint i never paint in oils, i do acrilics so i suppose we can not use the same medium for acrylic paint. I would like to know, thank you so much for this demostration.

I believe there are acrylic glazing mediums you can use for this. Though you can just thin the paint with water, I don't recommend it. You are taking a chance of creating a weak paint bond. Again, stick with medium.

Excellent information. I have seen various reports on zinc white being archival and not archival, what is your opinion on the paint and have you had any problems using zinc white? Thank you.

Thank you! 🙏 To be honest, I pretty much use just Titanium White. So I don't really know that much about the other whites. I know one of the frustrating things about art is there is so much conflicting information.

Every time I've used a glaze it's totally clouded up and ruined my painting

That's odd, I've never had that happen. Mediums don't typically go cloudy. Unless you're using white or some other opaque paint.

Your base paint must be TOTALLY dry before you glaze over it. Don't rush. The painting will decide when you can proceed with the glazing layers. Avoid opaque paints when glazing over your underpainting. You want your lights to glow from within. Pthalo blues and greens, thio violets are good examples of transparent colors that work very well.
