Hi! Beth, I am 42 yrs old and have been "struggling" with my violin learning and playing for nearly 2 yrs. However, it is a struggle that I enjoy and I find your words in most of your videos very encouraging for the adult learner. Keep up the good work! I must compliment you regarding your fantastic ability to drive home a point Although, I have a professional teacher here in Kolkata but he is a very silent guys who demonstrates very well but speaks very less too. Hearing you on you tube clears my thinking about violin play. Thank you very much. Regards

I think you are referring to the technique of slurring notes together? First play hooked bows. Play the G (down), pause, play A (down), pause, play E (down). THen make the pauses shorter and shorter until you can glue the notes together.

@Gaara7177 Absolutely. Viola techniques is 95% the same as violin technique. More than violinists, violists have to rely on the use of a healthy amount of steady bow weight since the strings are thicker and require good sticky contact to make them vibrate well.

Thank you so much, only been playing for about a year and when I actually force myself to use the whole bow, I actually sound good! Also for me, the frog to half of the length of the bow is what i have a habit of using. I feel the frog is easier to control and when I get to the tip i kinda wobble. Also I think the frog part makes it sound the most beautiful and deep. Thank you so much for these FREE lessons!

All accented bow strokes have varying degrees of attack on the note. We make those "sharp bites" by leaning in to the bow stick by a slight rotation of the upper arm. THe energy is then transferred through the index finger. When you real ease that pressure the bow sill scoot along at a higher speed. Tha'ts what makes the accent. I have other videos on all types of bow strokes at ViolinLab(dot)com.

the ease of doing vibrato on guitar doesn't do anything for the violin its completely different but again u are an amazing teacher!! i am going to soak up as much as i can from u! i do have a question tho... i paid 200 dollars for my violin and im wondering if that was a mistake? if i would have known that i was instantly going to fall in love with the instrument i probably would have invested more lol either way its good enough for now as long as i can get this bow to stop bouncing!! grrrrr :)

Marcato on the violin is produced by an abrupt attack to the note, followed by a fast bow speed. THe ending of the note depends on the note value (length) and style of the piece. It can be lifted or stopped on the string.

Any tips on how to play Vibrato? I have been wracking my brain trying to learn it but I don't know if the neck needs to be cleaned from putting the beginner sticker marks on it, and if so, I don't know what kind of product to clean it to the point of it being slick enough to do vibrato. I have heard so many things about vibrato but none of them are making sense to me.

Hello. Am i to assume that using more bow and playing the same notes and tune actually means that you must be bowing faster? Will you reach a limit to the speed acceptable and is it the bow speed and nothing else that is improving the quality of the sound? Jeff
