Very underrated video, thanks for the help on ship classification. I'm pretty surprised there's no comments on this video. Keep up the great work! It would also be cool if you did a history on ships and how they developed. That would probably get a lot of traction.

Thanks, and thanks for the great suggestion, that's indeed a cool idea!

Point of clarification on the Yawl (tbh in theory, I haven't sailed one yet), the mizzen is also stepped aft of the rudder, so it balances helm with the more forward-stepped main instead of providing forward drive

Yes that's a great point, I just recently saw a yawl in our local harbor and I noticed the same.

Enjoyed your video. Very well organized which helps me to learn. I admire your channel and what you've done in a short time. Would like quite a bit more visuals while you are speaking. You could show different versions of the 16 boat types for example, 3 different pictures of a Bermuda Sloop boat . The slides could be moving as you speak (or video) and different parts could be pointed out.

Thanks so much for your 'how to identify different boats' videos!! I've learned so much and you make it very easy to understand! My question is: Is there a way to tell different tall ships apart? For example the difference between a frigate/man o' war/ ship of the line/ galleon etc,, I can recognize a tall ship based on your advice (3+ masts/ square rigged etc) But what other information do i need to know to be able to tell tall ships apart by eye?

Really nice video. Good work. I agree a video with some history of how sailboats types developed would be awesome. Thanks!

I stand corrected: the Sailing Hydrofoil can either have a catamaran or trimaran hull design. If you have any questions about sailboat types for me, leave them in the comments!

All of your videos help a lot for beginners like me. Few comments: I believe there might be a misnomer here. The word 'junk', according to most historian I read, didn't come from China but rather Malay (and/or Javanese). The european got the word from early Portuguese and Dutch who traversed to Malacca, Sumatra and Java. Chinese sailboat at that time has its own name (wangkang or cunya), and to my uneducated eyes looks like the picture you gave. Anyway, Junk/Jong declined because its too big and fat (some are more than 2000tons) to go against the more agile european boat - altho, they gain the admiration from most european sailors. This was during the same time the sharp-stern Phinisi of the Bugis people (and Bedar for its smaller cousin in the Malay Peninsula) became popular then later legendary. Hence, in my view Chinese Junk might very well be an accepted misnomer. What do you think? And what type a Phinisi would be in? A schooner or a whaler or a ketch? The rigging is quite similar to a ketch, again to my uneducated eyes.

I've been reading Patrick o Brian's books about Lucky Jack Albury, and heard that word frigate used to describe a ship. Is that a type of tall ship, or is that something else?

A frigate is a ship-rigged vessel(3 masts), that has 28 guns or more on a single deck. It is a square-rigged tall ship, yes. The Royal Navy usually only had ship-rigged rated vessels. The ratings were 100+ guns: 1st rate, 82+ guns: 2nd rate, 60+ guns: 3rd rate, and smaller ships with 2 decks were 4th rate. 5th rate were frigates with between 32 and 44 guns. 6th rates were all ships down to 22 guns. 6th rates that were not frigates were just called "post ships" as they were commanded by an officer of post-captain's rank. 20 guns or less were called sloops whether they were ship-rigged or brig-rigged.

"Catamaran: Most people know this sailboat because of the popular..." I feel like I'm the only person that shouted "Waterworld!!!" 😂 Turns out its actually a Trimaran. See I learned something already!

Great video but you should know that Americans absolutely had Clippers. We invited them, the Early ships to be called Clippers were from Baltimore and they were called Baltimore Clippers.

Bet Western sailors joked about the Junk, considering it was their primary warship before steam, and were easy to destroy in battle
