Improving Makita table saw - rock solid fence.

Improving makita mlt100 table saw fence. Original fence is quite flimsy (and that's kidest I can do).
This fence is build out of a scrap steel pipe, ikea cutting board and 2 pieces of plywood.
Turned out very sturdy. I get much cleaner cuts and no kickback.

After all these years you still use this device or changed it because it doesn't work properly, I ask because I've done 3 similar ones, but none of them are good yet

I still use it. But, I'm actually thinking about getting more robust one. You do get what you pay for. This one was ok for seldom use. But, it seems the saw is kind of loose on the bearings now. Doesn't even make straight cuts. I will have to address that somehow. Either fix it or get a new better one.

Po pięciu latach sprawuje się idealnie. Niestety makita złapała luzy na łożyskach i nie tnie tak dobrze jak by się chciało... Także, chyba muszę odradzić tą piłę.

Nicely done. Thanks a lot for this video. I don't know if I can find some plastic sheets like the one you're using, but I can use something else, like some plywood. Anyway I've waited for someone to make some relevant videos about MLT100 improvements.

eugen dragos safta Thanks! These plastic sheets are just a cutting board from ikea - very cheap - probably cheaper than plywood :) They work really well as the plastic is quite slippery.

I've got an old Delta Rockwell Jetlock fence. Except for the head the fence is a gonner. I've been scratching my head about useing the Jetlock head, that locks up like a safe, to build a biesmyer type fence. Your design is pretty much what I've come up with but with some excellent improvements. What I'm going to build is going to be pretty much what you've come up with. Thanks. Now for the bad news. WATCHING YOUR TABLESAW WORK SCARES ME. NEVER leave the narrow cutoff between the blade and the fence. NEVER even set up your fence so your narrow cutoff is between the blade and the fence. NEVER NEVER EVER MAKE ANY CUT ON A TABLE SAW FREEHAND. NEVER. You're pretty handy in the metal shop, would you drill a small piece of metal by holding it down with your hand. I noticed you use cutting oil and slow drill speed and that when you started the metal work you clamped your work to the table. If you don't put that same attention to detail in your table saw work, you're going to pay for it with a finger or worse. One last admonishment, if you only get a kick back that piece of wood is going to be coming at you at roughly thirty miles an hour. You won't have time to duck or dodge.

I don't want to be a "told you so' but one day you are going to have a serious accident with that saw. NEVER leave a cut piece between the blade and the fence without your hand pushing it through or a push stick ........ believe me, one day it will get you.

+BOBBY OMAR Hey. Ply is an option. I had piece of steel tubing and it seemed easier to do than with ply. It's stiff, straight, you get right angle for free. But you can surely make a good plywood fence. Whatever you do it will be better than the original one...

+mick szym Hey. I had the same impression when I got that saw... It was real bad. I was unable to make a straight cut. And actually blade was not parallel to miters. I found out only after making cross cut sled. While making first cut with sled the blade started burning and stopped. Only then I found out it requires adjusting. Now I'm quite happy, but I had to make new fence and insert to make it work fine.

+mick szym This depends on where you live. You will have easier time finding good and cheap machines in US, but a hard time finding them in EU. I don't think you can get anything really good and cheap in EU.

Said Choucair It is actually wider. Untontunatelly I was not able to adjust zero on the original indicator. It was like 2mm off when pushed all the way to the right. I had to make new indicator. It turned out to work better than the original one(no cloudy plastic obstructing the view). I used a scrap piece of metal sheet I had laying around and I cut out a new shape with sharp pointer.

How did you get the saw disc and the fence parallel? I didn't see any adjustment in the video.

I used miter gauge fence. Locked the fence, aligned it with miter gauge fence on the front, then moved the miter gauge fence to the back and adjusted the fence. I used similar thing to align the blade to miter gauges. When I got this saw I couldn't get any straight cut, it turned out that the blade was misaligned. I only found out after I made a sled. So, it's worth checking for sure. There's no real adjustment screws, but I have loosened all the nuts holding and there was a bit of wiggle room to adjust the blade.

+Jon Suth It's decent. It all depends on what do you need it for. If you are going to do stuff like I do, for fun and pleasure it should do. If you are going to cut large pieces, and require high precision I would suggest to look for a saw with cast iron top and base. If you decide to go with this one like I did, you will definitely need to replace fence, insert, also I had to adjust the blade position(a first cut with sled revealed it was crooked). It's also worth mentioning that it's a direct drive saw, and that makes it a bit loud. So far I'm happy with it, it's a 'go to' tool for me, but again I don't use it professionally.

sumandl Thanks! The new fence is much better, I'm really happy with it so far. Firtst of all, I didn't get a kickback since I built it - that's a win! Now I feel like I want to use my saw more - and that's a win too. It seems like a fence rebuild is a must on this table saw.

Excellent work - I cant for the life of me understand why Makita of al the brands put such a crappy fence on the machine. Even the Ryobi fence is better because at least it locks at both ends, and goes the full length of the table.Just wondering - does the free end of the fence flex at all? Have you thought of incorporating a locking mechanism at the far end?

It seems like it all boils down to a price. You can't make it cheaper without compromising quality. But most of manufacturers these days go a bit too far making their stuff useless. Buy it cheap buy it twice seems to be their thinking. I didn't get any flexing with this one. I don't think that the lock on the other end would be needed.

Mike Sobczak Yeah, I had a hard time figuring out what to buy. I had a choice of either really crappy saw or really expensive one. This was the only thing that made sense. It's far from being perfect, but with few small mods it is a go to tool. Two biggest issues: insert and fence.

Leonardo Del Giudice Hey, thanks. I did that by loosening the screws that attach the steel pipe to the base, then aligned the fence and tightened it again. Holds up well so far. I actually had to do it twice since the blade was not parallel with the table... I found out that this is the case when I made a sled.

@@donseevanny I aligned the blade to a fence. First I aligned the fence to miter slots. That gave me a reference for adjusting the blade. Then I pushed the fence against the blade and adjusted the blade as needed. Hope that helps.

@@donseevanny I think there were few bolts holding the whole electric motor/saw assembly. I loosened those and moved the whole thing a bit. This is the only way you can adjust that. The saw itself comes with no adjustment screws :/

Thanks Krzysztof for both your answers. with MLT100s original fence it was quite a headache to create some guide rails for my table saw sled. Maybe it's my lack of experience. I'm only a wannabe carpenter so... :), you understand. Anyway if you have a better idea about making these rails, instead of cutting them from a pine piece of wood (I don't have other kind of wood now), kindly please let me know. I just can't wait to see more of your videos as they are pretty detailed and, obviously, you're using the same table saw as mine. Wish you all the best!

eugen dragos safta It seems we had the same issues. I only recently made this fence and the original one was a huge headache. I had the same problem with runners - I only had pine(quite cheap - construction grade) - so not very straight, nor very durable. I ended up buying one(literally one) oak floor board. I paid like $3 for it. This floor board turned out to be exactly the thickness of the runner(0.5in). This saved me a lot of time and headache. I only had to cut it into 0.25in strips. I hope that helps.

:) thanks. U got lucky. I only had as an alternative 10mm plywood, but I only used one piece to adjust the fence by cutting a few strips until I realized that every time I over pushed against my fence and that was the reason I've always failed to make the perfect cut :). As the fence is made out of aluminum if I press to much against it... DAAAH!!! it will bend a little bit :) so... I finally made it and then cut a few strips of pine. Thank you! Of course it helped, any advice is welcome.

Makita once made some very good gear and I believe a good reputation. Seems these days they have dropped their game, perhaps due to Chinese manufacture. title is incorrect, New Fence for table saw..... Not Solid. You can see in the last few seconds of this video when you lock in place the entire fence twists. Should have spent more time on this area and less on the fence itself.
