For every classical pianist, Hanon is the starting point on their long climb through piano technique. About every major area of technique that a beginning pianist needs is introduced in Charles-Louis Hanon's book. Both teachers and performers have been using the exercises to improve and maintain technique for decades now. This summer I've decided to revive my own practice of the set, but this time in all 24 keys. As a practice aid to ensure mastery, I will be posting improvisations on individual exercises (particularly the five-finger exercises from the first two sections).
Hanon Exercise No. 1: A simple ascending figure that skips a third up before rising to a sixth above the fundamental note, coming down to the next note of the series.
Some techniques used in the improvisation:
-The opening octave is derived from the third movement, instead falling from the third of the scale to the tonic.
-The entire figure is condensed into a cluster chord.
-The figuration in the left and right hands are layered on one another to create a combined contrary motion.
