This is so great if you just want to try bobbin lace for the first time and you don't to commit any money to it, in case you don't like doing it. Thank you!

I made mine with by cutting an old piece of styrofoam and covering it with fabric. It's been years and it's holding up just fine. I like the idea of paper towel for a roller pillow!

I appreciate your way of thinking, with this video I know I'll be able to give it a go. Just learned of bobbin lace today and subscribing and ringing the bell in hopes to see many more videos on bobbin lace. Thank you.

The clothespin bobbin is really a good idea, since it is so difficult to found the real thing.

I made myself a roller pillow out of an old vitamin bottle, a wood chop stick, a cut up dollar tree cutting board, upholstery foam, and hot glue covering in fabric in a cardboard holder to keep it still. I have it so the chop stick it attached to the bottle cap and can still be removed to hold thread, patterns, pins, etc.

Thank you so much for the tips!!! I wanted to get started on bobbin lace but when I read how to make the pillow, etc. for the work I almost backed out until I saw your video. Yes, just the things we have in the house will get the craft started!!

Ah you're a genius! I was watching you and wanted to try but obviously don't have the stuff. I am looking for stuff to make for a doll house and have enough crochet things (well in my skill range) and wanted to try something lacier! I will definately give this a try. I want to try tatting too but I may start with this first to see if I can come up with anything. Like they say "Necessity is the mother of invention" and while I don't actually need doll house things, wanting to make something pretty is reason enough for me. And I will learn something too!

I just remembered that I have bolster pillow that I'm not currently using that I might be able to use - depending on how squishy it is! Thanks for the great ideas for getting to try something new for dirt cheap!!!

I love your presentation style and the typical Bryce backing track of mellow string music, occasional baby chirps and the tinkle of scissors and pins in that lovely cut glass dish. Such a nice thing to hold pins - does it make it easier to pick them up?
@BryceHistorically
@BryceHistorically 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that. The sounds of my life. 😊 Yes, I like to keep my pins in a bowl because they lie flat, and I can just grab them. It’s also so much easier when I’m pulling them off of the pillow to just drop them into a dish, instead of placing each one into a pincushion. 😉

Oh my goodness I just found your channel today and I'm LOVING it! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge! ❤ I just had to comment on this video, I love how well rounded you are, I laughed seeing a tire pressure gauge paired with a calligraphy pen and nib, and then you balanced it out with colored pencils and crochet hooks and of course the clothespins! So real and so awesome! Thank you SO much! I can't wait to get started!

About 2 years ago, I saw a bobbin lace demonstration, and I thought it was amazing. It looked so hard and they where like no, they teach school children bobbin lace. However, I did not want to invest into so much to get me started on this craft (Hubby says I have too many crafts as it is LOL) I have plenty of threads for my tatting and other hoarding habits of craft supplies from thrift lol I have these same old fashion clothes pins (again, hoarding from thrift lol) and we just moved so I got a ton of good cardboard! I am so excited that I have everything I need to at least try this craft to see if I like it! Thank you!!

Do you have a video that explains these different types of pillows? I've been intrigued by this craft ever since I saw it in action at our art museum but never thought I'd have the patience or skill for it. My boyfriend apparently disagreed and bought me bobbins as well as a loom as an anniversary present. Now I have to try! Watching videos like this is showing me that it can be very approachable.

I am just starting with bobbin lace and have a pretty dumb newbie question for you. Long term I plan to be making the lace for my own victorian blouses and petticoats (and other heirloom sewing). So I am talking about long lengths of narrow lace. What kind of pillow do I need for that? All the kits seem to have cookie pillows but I am beginning to think maybe I need a bolster or a roller. In short I am researching myself into total confusion. The thing is I would like to get the right pillow for my own long term goal from the start rather than something that just wont do the job and have to replace it.

Absolutely! My next video, which is taking forever to edit, is about recreating some Edwardian lace from one of my tea dresses. To address your question, though, cookie pillows, bolster pillows, and roller pillows will all work for making lengths of bobbin lace. Do you have one that you are drawn to? My favorite is the roller pillow, but that is just personal preference. I like that the roller allows the pattern to go on forever, and that the bobbins lay down flat. 😊
@myrany8407
@myrany8407 4 жыл бұрын
@@BryceHistorically TY so much for the reply. Yes the infinite pattern is why I was drawn to the roller pillow. Somehow I would think having to move the work and repin it (to get the continuous length) on a cookie pillow is asking for problems.

I'm not a guy, but you could use duct tape to keep the roller pillows from moving. Great video.
