Thanks mate.... I’m havin* a go at open G and slide . after 50 years of standard tuning. As an old Aussie bushman it’s taking me a while to get a sound I’m happy with!! Appreciate your style of video, freely giving a few pointers to different aspects of the 12 bar routine. Great and glad I found you Cheers from a western Australian sheep station

Well, that's partly the benefit of being a bachelor. Most people have families, kids and wives to support. They can't afford one National let alone three. I remember when having one was my dream when i was young. They're just too expensive. Thankfully the market, and inexpensive guitars that sound great are available these days. I love my Nationals but there are a lot of inexpensive reso's that sound awesome for cheap. Doesn't matter if they're made in China or Indonesia, Korea...wherever. Same as I love my Gibsons, Epiphone have been putting out some really great sounding guitars for cheap the last few years. it's all about the sound and feel. Not the price these days. Not like when I was young.

Fantastic video AGAIN! Quick question from a beginner on resonator if I may though. How are you getting the thump on that low G string when there’s a handrest over the bridge and you can’t use the standard palm mute ala regular acoustic guitar? Probably something really easy but I have no idea how you’re doing it. Thanks for sharing all of this information so freely. I’m finding it truly invaluable!
@myfreebluesguitarlessons
@myfreebluesguitarlessons 6 жыл бұрын
Good question. I'm actually resting my hand partially on the hand rest over the bridge, right at the top and lightly on the strings as well to get that thump. It's just a matter of touch. You'll get it. Your hand will start doing it. Whatever sound you're trying to get your hands will adapt to without you thinking about it much. Just keep banging away.
@olgreybear7997

Thanks for explaining. I’ll give that a go. It’s been something that’s puzzled me a fair bit but that does make perfect sense. Thanks again and have a great week! :0)

You too. Just keep at it. Your hand will make the adjustments it needs to over time and practice.

For while I had a single cone Dobro that had a narrow "hand rest" instead of the National style. It was like a 3/8 inch strap up and over the strings. Made it easier to mute the strings. It was the stock set up. I had a few metal and wooden single cone Dobros over the years and don't remember which version it was.

It’s funny I told my friend about open tuning and he said that’s like rearranging the furniture on a blind man lol
@myfreebluesguitarlessons
@myfreebluesguitarlessons Жыл бұрын
It's a good analogy for sure. But it really helps if you're playing solo with just one guitar, and can make everything sound bigger. You can fill a lot more sonic space with one guitar open tuned. I've gotten to the point where I can see the fretboard in open tunings and standard tuning. It comes with practice, but it's so worth it. Another guy to study and listen too is Lightnin Hopkins. He used chord voicings that made his sound bigger in standard tuning. Keep on pickin buddy. Thanks for the comment.

Hello Blues Man ! I purchased a used wood body Resonator guitar that came with a Lace sensor pickup and a Myers goose neck pick up which I thought was a good bonus. I have not had it but a few days and have noticed that i have a hard time with getting good slide tone from the low e and a but better on the upper strings. Is this a characteristic of a resonator? or do you think something is wrong? I love your lessons thank you.
@myfreebluesguitarlessons
@myfreebluesguitarlessons 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a set up is needed. Is it a spider cone or biscuit cone? What I mean is, does the cone face inward and has a cover plate and f-holes, or does it face outward like on a Dobro?
@timothy5974
@timothy5974 4 жыл бұрын
My Free Blues Guitar Lessons thank you for your reply. I have a recording king biscuit not a spider bridge. I did tune it up to open E from open G and it seems a bit better. What string gauge do you think I should use?I made my own slide from a wine bottle and thought this might also be a problem. I want to say thank you again for your time.

@@timothy5974 I use john pearse .13's spanish neck resophonic guitar strings for any reso I've owned. To me they sound the best and last the longest. And just experiment with different slides. They're like 8 bucks. I like glass but prefer chrome or brass.

How high is your action? And thank u for these awesome lessons!
@myfreebluesguitarlessons
@myfreebluesguitarlessons 4 жыл бұрын
My action is very low on all of my guitars. Some slide players recommend you raise your action. I don't because it forces you to become more accurate and play with a lighter touch. Yes in the beginning you will knock around alot. But there's no way to totally eliminate that anyway unless you were playing a squareneck on your lap with a bar and the action is an inch above the fretboard so you don't fret anyway. It's a personal choice.
