Today I was walking with a friend, who is a little afraid of dogs, at a local park. A big dog came running up to us and wasn't slowing down. As you've shown in many videos, I walked through the dog, which bounced off me. The dog then went to jump on my friend. I grabbed its collar and told it to sit, which it did, said "off you go" as I let go of the collar. The dog sat looking at me for another second before bounding off. A few minutes later it came barreling up to us again but about 10 meters out slowed to a trot, sniffed my hand and ran off. Had you not watched your videos I wouldn't have had a clue what to do or read the dog properly. Thank you for all you put on KZbin!

Love this session; short & bang on point. All about the dogs attitude - “I’m just gonna” moments. I’m just gonna fly out the door, bark at a dog, rub my muzzle on mums leg to get the halti off, scratch the ground after every pee like the world is mine. The answer is “no, you’re not” 😂. What a gorgeous dog. The owner did a great job of applying what Joel had said during the session - well done to him!

Fantastic advice. When I first got my rescue, on opening my back door, he would bolt out barking like crazy. I used the knee block method and after while he would correct himself and wait. I would then go out of the door first, to show him I am boss and everything is ok in the garden, because I am calm but sometimes corrections were needed. After a week or so he would hardly bark and be hyper-reactive to noises. Now if he does bark, he corrects himself mostly after 3 or 4 barks. Another way i got him to learn impulse control, was to throw his favourite dog treats a few feet in font of him and tell him to 'Leave it!'(He learned impulse control got him the reward of the treat). It helped a lot in dealing with his dog reactivity and lunging at them on spotting one close by. The more he corrected himself over time, the less cue's I gave and instead positive reinforcement on his correct decision of behaviour with impulse control. Always love when a Beckman video pops up, they have helped me so much with the effective methods. 😀

I have a 1 1/2 yr. old doberman who is 113 pounds and he is a lot like this guy. I am working on impulse control with my adolescent GSD. I have three young dogs which we got on quick succession, ages 3, 2, and 11 months. I’m making it a practice to make them sit and wait before going outdoors, getting in and out of the car, etc, and to go one at a time when I say their name. I shot myself in the foot for leash walking getting so many so fast because we haven’t been able to do individual training, but that’s on us and we know we need to do it. The upside is all three are GREAT off leash, they stop and come on a dime when I whistle so we can walk them daily off leash no problem. One issue is my GSD puppy 11 mos gets very excited and yelps loudly when he runs down the stairs or outside at night which is a problem because we have close neighbors. This is something I’m unsure how to stop.

This is the same as my dog! I have a 2 1/2 yr. old rescued Great Dane who was beaten and starved by her former owner and is very reactive and aggressive. She is 85 lbs. and it is challenging to control her at times. She lunges at everyone coming to the house, but once they are here for a while, she is fine with them. Sits by them, and hugs them, but the minute they get up to move around, she lunges again. She is extremely triggered by other dogs. She actually got in a fight the other day with a dog. When we are out walking - she acts like I don't exist, constantly leaving me. I can get her to sit, but she won't even make eye contact with me. I am working with your loose leash walking videos which are great, but once she is triggered, she is so strong that I cannot move her away from a situation, no matter how hard I pull. I am terrified she is going to bite someone or another dog so I avoid taking her out, which is unfair to her. She is a sweet dog who has had a rough life, but I want it to be better for her. I don't want to be terrified anymore to take her out. Thank you for putting out your amazing training videos. Baby steps every day.

I basically have to teach my husband because he never had dogs before me, so I was explaining that’s why I want us to make it a habit for our 3 dogs to sit and wait for their name to be called before they run out the door because it reinforces the mindset of listening to direction and being calm and waiting. I think the problem is the breakdown of family structure and you have all these young professionals and single people now who never had a dog in the home, they didn’t start a family life young so they are all self centered materialists and they know NOTHING about dogs. They go to trainers for guidance but let’s be honest, MOST trainers are the same as they are and they don’t understand dogs. Beckman is literally the ONLY one I can watch without getting angry and mouthing off in the comments 🤣 I watch him and go “as someone who was taught to interact with dogs before I could walk, and EVERY family member in all the generations and extended family all had dogs so it was ingrained in my family and passed down, and I just understand dogs like breathing, Beckman does the things that I would do.”

I got my first pitbull mix after successfully training 3 other dogs. He respects me, so if I'm around he listens. But if someone else watches him or someone shows up at my house when I'm busy, he doesn't care and jumps on people and trips out. My family member was watching him when I had a baby and he jumped a fence and attacked a Shih Tzu like it was a rabbit or other prey. He's 9 months now. He was 6 months when he bit a dog. He's good at obedience, but he's more instinctual compared to my other dogs. The moment I turn my back he humps the other dogs and gets pushy.

I wish you would do more videos on redirection. My collie will redirect onto me if I try to grab her while she’s going nuts barking in the yard. What I mean is : She will come uncorked if she sees a dog near our property. I will yell hey! And clap. Ignored. I go to grab her collar and have her sit, she will spin around and go right for my face or legs if she can. I know it’s frustration , just not sure exactly how to handle it. It’s making me afraid of her because she has actually gotten my face before and left a bruise.

Instead of suppressing the unwanted behavior try determining the cause and eliminate that. This frustration you mentioned could it be be from something the dog needs but is not getting. Most dogs are not getting their needs met to the point of poor mental health.Why are they stressed, anxious, frustrated and insecure? Is the dog in the backyard alone instead of with its pack? Does it get breed appropriate mental stimulation? Exercise? Does it have purpose a job that fulfills it’s genetic instinct?

My lab has taken to barking at people talking in the street. If it's persistent I take him out to meet the people. If it's a delivery man, or a meter reader, I go to the window or front door with him, acknowledge the presence of someone to my dog, then distract them with something more interesting. Collies are wired though, you may need to wear him out with ability classes, or long walks with a rubber ball and a ball thrower. Rubber frisbies are great for collies - but expensive! There's nothing more satisfying than tearing your prey in half once you've leaped six feet in the air to bring em down.

This is what i tell people when their dog is reactive but wont listen to you is: 1, you dog doesnt give a frikk about you, which means you haven't settled a boundary and upheld it or given it any training. 2, The dog resource guard you, it doesn't see you as their owner the dog see you as their bone AKA they own you and you are their toy (still not gonna care about verbal cues) 3, you talk to your dog 24/7. It usually one or two of the above in most times. Giving your dog corrections doesnt mean beating it up x.x it can be as simple as placing it on the ground from the couch or moving into the dog and pushing it away with your body. I heard Joel emphasise a lot of this should be plain good manners. I get the impression providing a cue for everything is like being a nagging parent. Assertive and consistent expectations. Just spent half an hour with my lab on a lead walking around in circles! We go to the cafe in the park - he gets treats from the customers there. This morning he was trying to drag me to "his" cafe. Nope not today, today we are walking up and down and across and around the car park until you remember you follow me buddy, not the other way around. I've been sick for a few months and a friend has been walking him, now he thinks he's in charge!

For a great dane this guy looks so fucking smart, sure goofy and careless and a bit dominant, but I've seen great danes in group training classes even with experienced owners where in distracting environments they are just not motivated or care what the owner says. But man this one is juge for sure, the fact that price looks tiny next to him wow! My grandma had a very similar character Great Swiss Mountain dog, a bit smaller in size, but the weight though... He didn't hate other dogs, but he def was dominant and emotional like this guy, and that is a lot even if good natured underneath.

HELP!!!! BRODY IS A 54% golden retriever,45% Australian cattle dog and 1% border collie. I'm dealing with so many of these issues with him. I'm 60 and my husband is sick all the time but gone to work 14 hours a day. So I'm left to try to deal with his bully, dominating issues. Problem is though I have a small dog that cannot dweeb her self from him in any way. She's 23lbs and he's 55lbs. She can't go outside and do her business without him and his issues. We don't live a life he needs and my husband won't let him go to another home where he deserves to be

Hey I got a shelter year and 8 month old pitmix and a breeders 9 week old Rottweiler lab mix, both of them are extremely close to eachother over these past few months and learn off eachother and it's amazing to know how much they care for eachother, but ever since we got our puppy our pitmix hasn't been following commands anymore unless there's a treat involved, where as our puppy will listen on command without a seconds hesitation and that's how our pit used to be, any ideas on what's going on with him and any solutions or tips on helping him back to where he was? I'm just getting tired of having to grab his collar and making him sit and down. Also his recall went from 85% to basically 15% of the time. They do have similar names which are Baylor(pitmix) and Taylor(labrotti)

At home my dog obeys. Outside of our yard she becomes out of control. She literally tried to jump all over people when I go to greet anyone. When cars drive by, she attempts to chase them. Other dogs, she ignores. When nobody is around, she walks and pays attention without an issue. She doesn't walk through thresholds without permission. Any suggestions on what to do , especially with people. She isn't mean toward them, she just becomes overwhelming excited. I'm afraid that she may accidentally knock someone down and hurt them. She also has the issue of trying to grab them with one of her front feet.

If she's not aggressive I'd say slowly introduce her to more and more of the things that are a concern and train in those moments. Sounds happy go lucky and just excited to meet everyone and everything. But you can't have her acting a fool when there so she needs to know what she can do in those situations. I'd say just expose her to more if possible to desensitize but still gotta train her when doing it. Beckman?

Try introducing her to a dog at a distance? The moment she forgets you are there, turn her away, walk away from the object of her excitement. Eventually she'll realise her behaviour is like an off switch that stops her meeting cool people and dogs.

Maybe check out some of Beckman's doorway videos. Dogs have kind of specific brains, so if you say sit, they go "ok, I sit here on this floor", but any difference in the situation (grass or dirt instead of floor, for example), they have to learn the word means the same thing no matter what's under your butt. So she doesn't realize she can't do whatever she wants outside of the house.

Yes, don’t. Dogs cannot have a natural meeting on leash. A natural dog meeting does not include leashes and more importantly does not include humans. Proper socialization teaches dogs they will not have to meet strangers on a leash (dog or human) this is how you get a neutral dog and your dogs trust.

This is the first Dane I've seen that needs this. There are Danes on the dog beach that are pretty ostracised by the other dogs because they are simply too big for rough and tumble. I notice you use the gentle leader a lot. I'm not sure a gentle leader will fit my French Bulldog's face, is it essential to achieve that correction? Getting them to look back at you seems the key here. He is the same, running 100 mph at people and dogs, slamming his paws on people, very impulsive, full on scratching the ground and peeing a lot. He also likes to get between the owner and their dog and demand attention from humans without actually socialising with the dog, kinda creating a jealousy or protectiveness in the other dog. With most dogs he just stands upright with his heckles up, and plays occasionally. Wouldn't call him dominant, just rude!

The gentle leader is generally used for strong dogs that could overpower the handler. I doubt your Frenchie is going to pull you over so a well-fitted collar or prong if desired and legal should do. 😊

How would it work with an over socialized dog instead? He doesn't wanna meet every single dog we see, but with the few "lucky" ones he just freezes, stares at them and start pulling the crap out of the leash until he can get up to them and play bow until they reciprocate. He can't budge me but I'm not the only one walking him, and my mother can't hold back a 35kg labrador built like a corso.

I'd say you need to do the tamping down/ we ain't pulling Dad today to go do whatever you want to go to and then do it with you and your Mom. If he checks in with you after a little training for this behavior but doesn't do so well with just your mom, show her how you want it handled and be there to supervise and help her so he knows it's with EVERYONE that walks him. I hope this strong dog isn't on a back clip harness or the walker turns into the sled lol. Maybe Beckman will chime in too.

@@rptrick79 Nah no harness unless I need it for medical reasons 😂 he does check in when I call him but if he decides to focus onto something there's nothing in the world distracting him, whether he's leashed or not. If you're miles away and get spotted, be sure he'll stalk you like a border, all crouched down and shit, until he can get to you and jump around like he's on crack. What pisses me off if that he definitely can control himself in many other situations but he just can't not greet the few dogs he's in love with. Sometimes he's just too much. I wouldn't even be worried about him doing that 'cause I raised him so that he never fights back, no matter what is done to him and would rather get away, but I don't know what the other dog will do(well I do know, we all know those out of control bullies and the clueless owners that can't discipline their dog).

@@pumpgod940 I'd say it basically the same, you don't go until we say you can go. Repetition, it's gonna suck at first hell eventually be like "shit, I gotta listen all the time?" Sounds like a younger Lab maybe higher prey drive? does he get exercise other than walks? Maybe different forms of exercise to stimulate his brain and then a little impulse control with distractions.. is he intact and are these females he loves lol.

@@rptrick79 2.5yo, intact, male or female doesn't really matter to him as long as it's a dog he likes. We do train almost every day, I've been doing repetitions for almost 2 years now but he just has a thick af neck, so I think he doesn't even feel the corrections and the one time I pulled way too hard the leash just snapped and he just kept on going towards the box😅it's nowhere near the level of the dogs joel works with, and he's probably the best behaved dog in the city I live in, I am very demanding but damn this one thing isn't that much to ask .

I walk my buddies 95 lbs pit something and the other mix from time to time. He's strong as shit, shoulder sore as hell after correcting this dog just to walk and not pull in the beginning. He eventually calms the F down but doesn't get out as often and as long he should for a walk. I ended up giving him my dog Franks (rip) old easy walk harness and he says it's helped a lot. He had this loose ass back clip harness. Maybe that will help with your mom walking him? They don't like being pulled down to the side that's kinda what those do.
