As an Indian, Even I didn't knew such positions were commanded by citizens of various religions. Also one more thing I would like to add here about Indira Gandhi who is considered among the worst PM in Indian history which actually goes along the lines of religious freedom. After the Operation Blue Star, Senior Congress leader A K Antony requested Indira Gandhi to change her Sikh bodyguards, She refused saying 'Are we not secular?'. Whatever happened next, It shows the morality and conviction of the Indian leaders to allow every religion to practice freely.

As a result of this we lost precious parts of India like Sindh, parts of Punjab, Dhaka, Karachi etc. The problem is only with those people who put religion before the country. And no one feels the need to tell who did this. And India has always been secular. These ideologies like Sikhism, Janism, Buddhism etc. have been flourishing for a long time. And they are. I live in france rn and my parents are from india. I went to two cousin marriages in 2016 one by one. One in karachi, pakistan and another in indore, india (my hometown). My whole narrative about both india and pakistan was that these are 3rd world coubtries and would have issues. It was 6day stay in karachi and 2day in lahore. One of my cousin's (fm) friend (fm) asked me to convert and when i told her i am an atheist she was in shock and her whole group left us. My cousin screamed at me in night for ruining her friend circle. They left their freind becuase one of the relatives of that cousin was atheist💀💀 i was fortunate i left pakistan the next day. I was prepared for india to be the same thing next day but just much more hindu version of it. I was completely shocked. My relatives were having a ceremony where many marriages were happening all at once (i dont know the word for it) and funnily the same place held hindu marriage in day and the same night they held christian marriage (it was not a church, it was a party maybe, but you could see the contrast and there was no problem) i found my love of life there who happened to be muslim and even indian muslims are much more tolerant and educated.

You mentioned about growing religious extremism in India. I am a hindu from Bengal, and we always voted for left parties/non-bjp. And today, we are facing a change in demography, where we have become minorities in multiple districts. The rise of right parties like bjp is not an accident. With radicalised neighbours like pakistan, bangladesh, and elements within our own borders, self-preservation and security is a growing concern in India. We all know of what happened to the hindus of pakistan, and want to avoid the same fate.

By your logic, in all the non-muslim countries where right wing is in power, there is growing religious extremism. But that's just not true. Look at the European countries dealing with the problems of muslim immigration, and you'l realise the issues of demographic change/self preservation/security etc in the world right now.
