Great upload. I’ve haven’t seen this race since 1989 when I was 10 years old. I remember that weekend. I watched my first Indy 500, then the Mexican GP, and IMSA at Lime Rock. That was a great weekend of racing and for a 10 year old kid, it was great.🏁🏁🏁

wow an early version of the HANS device back in '89, interview and what it looks like around the 1:20:20 mark

Yep, Jim Downing was the brother-in-law of the inventor of the HANS device, Dr. Robert Hubbard. They set about developing the HANS after a mutual friend of theirs, Patrick Jacquemart, was killed in a crash.

Dan Gurney won the Belgian GP in 1967. A year prior his Belgian GP was marked by an unusual slow lap. In miserable circumstances he had to stop somewhere out on the track to take a pee.

GTP was so much better than Group C

Yes, generally it was. But there were some pretty good Group C races in the 80's, too. Especially at some of the older historic circuits.

@@AmericasChoice The Nurby races were definitely great.

@@jasonmoyer Yup, and Spa. There is some good video from those races floating around, including an intense onboard with Jochen Mass in a 962 at Spa circa 1985, including being passed by teammate Stefan Bellof who later died in the race. I really think in a lot of ways the IMCA GTP and Group C era was the pinnacle of racing. The cars, the drivers and the circuits. I still watch WEC and F1 but it is just not the same. Oh, I did see some Trans Am and Can AM in period and that was exciting, too.
