Just a brushed on layer of cobalt or magnesium on the tip? As a scientist she's been working on this for quite some time and hasn't thought of a bullet that is some non ferrous metal until just now? Normal bullets are lead, typically jacketed in copper. So is lead too soft to pierce the armor but steel core armor penetrating rounds are defended against with some magnetic armor? They couldn't deduce that these weren't biological just from the armor plates she has recovered? You can't kill them with a bullet from a gun but a fire axe can take off fairly thick tentacles? That is depressing. I mean...make the minimum effort. But maybe it's intentional and she found a swarm of nanobots on the ground? by focusing a telescope 1.2 meters? Maybe?
