The country depicted in the movie is not actually Japan but an unnamed fictional one, as the ending in the manga shows that the protagonist escapes the regime to a peace loving safe country that is, Japan Also, to be precise, the person selected by lottery will be shunned not only because of a past criminal record, rather committing a criminal act after notification of the Ikigami, because receiving a 24h timer before someone's death pushes them over the edge
@nerysghemor5781
@nerysghemor5781 Жыл бұрын
Interesting, I didn't know that about the manga. Given that...I don't know Japanese but the English translation of this makes me think that the mangaka was trying to show just how ugly this fictional "other Japan" is by using the word prosperity. If the mangaka is a pacifist, he could be thinking of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere that Japan had until their defeat in World War II, and invoking that to make people feel distaste right away towards that law.

0:20 now we know the real reason behind Japan’s population decline but im honestly surprised half the population didn’t just give up, *”youre gonna die anyways so go work harder, be the best corporate slave”* lmao In actuality, crime rate would increase, the desperation would make people do whatever they want, since it’s random and why does it matter? they’ll just die one day. Unless it was like “if you work harder, the chances of your name appearing in the lottery gets lowered” then there’s actually no reason to follow ethics let alone work hard for the GDP, why bother? neither ethics nor working hard will save you.

“The law is supposed to create an appreciation for life by instilling fear of death, that way the citizens will work harder to make something out of the little time they have since they could die any day.” So until this law was created, no one was ever afraid of the natural cycle of life and their inevitable demise which could happen at any moment with no way to stop or prevent it?
@brunoslybruno
@brunoslybruno Жыл бұрын
in a way it makes sense, most people would go their lives thinking that death will never come - or, for those that accept it will come, they always think it'll be so far, that it happens to others but not to you, sure, everyone knows you could get shot randomly, but how often you actually fear it'll happen? most people actually do go through as if they were never gonna die - not saying the plan is good or anything, but people not being heavily afraid of death as *knowing* theres guaranteed deaths
@breakfreak3181
@breakfreak3181 11 ай бұрын
@brunoslybruno In advanced nations, only dumb (and young, or a combination of both, lol) go through their lives as if they're not going to die. Most adults have life assurance, life insurance, a pension, savings (ha, I wish, lol), wills, funeral plans. Y'know typical adult stuff? Because they *know* they aren't gonna be around forever.

The history behind the draft is interesting, while I don't support it's a bit hyperbolic to compare the too unless this is a joke. In the USA it was 1st introduced by Lincoln for ages 21 and up although it existed long before, the war of 1812 was because the English did something called impressment of American sailors where they drafted them because some used to be English. USA didn't take kindly to this. Many eastern European countries and countries around the world have conscription which is compulsory service for everyone not just a lottery.

Has anyone ever noticed that the last bit of the movie almost predicted tthe future? The part where the politician was gonna get assassinated? This happened to the Abe Prime Minister of Japan.

based on my very very very poor Japanese, "iki" means life or to live, and kami (the voiced version is "gami" which is usually used in word combinations) could either mean paper or god. So ikigami would probably mean something like life paper, life god, paper of life, or god of life...something with that meaning, which makes it totally ironic :D
