I get a great sense of nostalgia, thinking about being a kid and sitting in the yard at dusk and watching the fireflies dance around. I hope we don't lose so many through pesticides and other means, that my children won't be able to enjoy them the way I once did. I do seem to remember there being many more when I was younger, but maybe that is just my mind romanticizing the experience. -Nathan

Humans are sight creatures. When it is dark out we rely more on the other senses...scent, sound, feel. In the heaviness of summer nights, scents, sounds, and feels are most abundant. The sight of flickering gentle glows in flight make us more attuned to these other desirable sensations that are already very rich, very saturated. We "recall" them very well in the future without really remembering, should we be in a cold wintery environment. Missing summer, but not really deprived. I think the Experience is romanticizing your mind. But it is not forceful, being translucent yet vivid.

Grew up in Florida and saw Fireflies. Moved to Washington DC and saw Fireflies near the White House when getting off from work in late night shifts and going to the subway in the 1980s.

I saw lots of them this evening. I purposely turned of the road that I was on to watch them. We I was a kid, I would catch them just to see them up close. They are pretty neat little creatures. #naturelover.....

When a child I believed fireflies were just fantasy-insects. Then I came across one in Sweden at night.

AM GOING TO MY VILLAGE TO RESEARCH ABOUT FIREFLIES AGAIN, BECAUSE THESE INSECTS ARE EXTINCT IN THE TOWNS AND CITIES BUT ARE BECOMING MORE AND MORE IN THE VILLAGE AREAS

We don't have fireflies where I live in Cali. So sad, because we have beautiful sunsets in summer and just beautiful summers in general.

California is on the dry side, even summer evenings. And the evenings cool down very quickly, unlike the east coast. I think fireflies like warm, and humidity, or at least not too dry. Summer breezes in CA are not as gentle as they are in humid conditions.

Why is it that this video merely resembles all the things from the recent TED talk about Fireflies? Was this a collaboration?

"Summer's gift to people everywhere"? I live in Western Europe and I don't think I've seen a single firefly in my life, despite spending parts of it in rural areas. I heard there are regions in Europe where they are still common but in general, I guess we already destroyed too many floodplain forests and covered our continent with artificial lights. For all the bad the States are doing to our planet, I guess you can still be glad you have such a low population density.
@EricSundquistKC10 жыл бұрын
They are still common in the dense forests in Belarus.
@unvergebeneid10 жыл бұрын
Eric Sundquist Yeah that's why I said "Western Europe" because you guys in the east managed not to destroy your forests nearly as much as we did.

This was not exactly what I was looking for but... learned a lot? I guess? Except that phosphorescence and bioluminescence are two different things, which I already knew from my entirely real career. Man, I feel bad about myself tonight.
