Hi BTP 👋🏻! Makes you wonder if the whiskey consumption had something to do with all that broken window glass? 😳
@BelowthePlains2 жыл бұрын
yeah we always seen to notice a correlation between pits with a lot of alcohol and a lot of broken windows! its a little presumptuous to assume that drinking was why but.. yeah i think more time that not, when we find a ton of broken windows and whiskey bottles, that they are somehow linked

I agree with earlier comment, cool to have locals come out. Maybe invite some of the elders over and share local stories in the video. With all the whisky bottles there have to be some tales to be told. Thanks for the hard work n knowledge. ✌

I love when locals come out and stand around watching you. I think that’s a thing the country over where old men gather around anyone doing work to stand and watch while swapping stories. From Ohio where I grew up, to Florida and Washington state where I live now, the fastest way to gather the old men around is to start doing work (better if you have big machinery involved). I love that.

The history is always so interesting-this is probably the 5th video wherein a building/home/hotel burned to the ground. I guess a lot of open flames in places back then-Thank you for taking us along with you on your digs!
@BelowthePlains2 жыл бұрын
haha yeah i noticed the same thing when researching these videos.. yeah back in the day they used candles and had wood/coal stoves in all the houses. i noticed that when i can find the time of year they burned down, it was either in the dead of winter.. and prarie fires in the summer had caused 2 of them to burn down too, but yeah, fire was a major hazard back in the day. Those maps at the beginning are actually fire insurance maps. the company was extremely accurate when drawing those maps, bc that was the beginning of the "construction codes" that we still have today.. everything had to be in the right place to avoid creating and spreading fires

The town I'm in Hastings Nebraska was founded in 1886 ish era. But I don't know how to read the old map. It was built around farming and the railroad. I'm pretty darn sure there are a ton of priveys and bar pits. If you do come to check it out and or dig I would love to tag along just to watch. I'm just getting to where I can spend more time out of my wheelchair. I think it would be a blast to see some of this town's history come alive through found bottles. I have no desire to be in your video just want to see the bottles. Theres an even older much larger town called Grand Island which is call the tribe city by nick name. No clue what the other city is. Lol. Would love to have some of those slicks. Thanks.
@BelowthePlains3 жыл бұрын
yeah. im gonna add that ur screen name into my notes and ill look into the town and learn about it,. we were looking to actually get some digging in, in nebraska sometime this summer. and yes of course we would love to have you out there with us, i think you would be surprised at some of the stuff that we pull out of these pits. So how about this? i'll do some research into this town and try find the old maps and locate where everything used to be, and you can message me when it warms up and remind me, then we can exchange contact information.. ill see if i can get you a email address here in the next week that you can contact me on, and we can go from there. so ill get you that email address (give me a few days) and in like late march or early april you can message me, and we can go from there.

What occurred in the Dakota states where large buildings occupied sites and after fires or demolition, the property remained vacant? Did railroads relocate and leave the communities without rail service? Did the Depression cause communities to not recover?

Do you know what kinds of seeds they ate but didn’t digest?
@BelowthePlains Жыл бұрын
i think they are mostly berry and tomato seeds, because ive had two ppl tell me that after we left, the ground grew those. but they could really be anything. im pretty sure seeds are designed to be digested and when they are excreted, they get fertilized and it actually helps them grow! thanks for watching

@BelowthePlains3 жыл бұрын
yeah we used to dig alot of residential pits but they are so hit and miss.. usually miss.. so over the last year we narrowed our focus on hotels, saloons, and depots, and stage stops.. unless its historic then we dig it.. so we end up digging fewer pits but we get better bottles.. this one wasnt a great pit
@debraporch78883 жыл бұрын
Another fantastic video! You were able to dig up quite a few bottles, but it was unfortunate that there were very few embossed. The elongated pumpkin seed flask is unusual to me, that was my first time seeing one. I had no idea that they existed. We're they made at the same time as the round pumpkin seed flask? Is the flask elongated another way? It is so cool that whole enjoying the video it is so educational too. Take care y'all and stay safe. ✌

@BelowthePlains3 жыл бұрын
oh yeah im sure it was mass produced. i guess all the bottles from the dakotas were for the most part, created to the east of the dakotas, and shipped in with dakota embossing. at least for the first few decades after its inception as a state.. oh and i posted your video in the end screen to try help you get some traffic. we will be sure to mention your channel when we start filming in the spring and tell everybody to swing by your channel

@BelowthePlains2 жыл бұрын
haha i get requests for the seeds all the time but no one ever follows thru! but one guy did tell me that after we left a few months later, a tomato plant sprouted up on the spot where we dug, which i thought was pretty cool.. so apparently some of the at least seem to be viable after 100+ years.. kinda crazy to think about that. and yeah, thats about as organic as you can get. thanks for leaving us a comment!
