I think the monster was meant to be a social commentary on the HOA. I’ve never lived in a neighborhood with an HOA and hearing all of the horror stories about them over the years I never want to.

Basically a group of homeowners in the area create a group that mandates how everything has to be in every home, they have to approve any remodels or additions, they can fine you for not following their arbitrary rules, you have to pay to be a member if you live there regardless if you want to be part of it or not, and if you build up enough fines or refuse to pay your dues and they reserve the right to sell your home without you knowing and keep the money to recoup whatever they were supposed to get from you. They are super unethical and should be illegal, but aren’t. Avoid them at all costs. You move anywhere make sure you specifically tell the realtor to avoid an HOA.

I read of a guy that as a revenge to the hoa put a toilet in his front lawn and planted some flowers in it. It counted as porcelain garden decoration since it wasn't connected to anything or had a cesspit below it, so the HOA could not do a thing.

Heard a story of someone not signing the HOA agreement for a particularly shitty HOA and the HOA forgot about it. Harassed and fined the fuck out of them for every little thing until they contacted a lawyer. The lawyer realized the HOA done goofed by not making sure the home owner signed the HOA agreement. Because of that the harassment and fines were illegal and effectively resulted in the HOA being sued out of existence literally.

I have an uncle where he and his 5 buddies (3 are cops) run/own the HOA of their neighborhood and they only have it to prevent power hungry Karen's from making one. the only rules i know of that they enforce are no F bombs on your mailbox (25$ fine), no trying to create rebellions/rioting in the streets (neighborhood eviction), don't point guns at your neighbors (unless you want to get shot), and keeping fires in line with the local fire department regulation standards (so no more homemade fire-nados :[ ).
