I appreciate how nicely you speak to Melissa when under all this pressure. You never raise your voice or yell at her when she’s saying “I can’t” or whatever and that shows us all how you can keep your cool and show her how to do the task at hand. You’re a good husband Dusty. You treat your family well. ❤

Yes, I've too appreciated the respect you give each other. In a world that sometimes seems upside down crazy, there is love & respect on your ranch. You risk your neck, to give all you can find inside you, to help your animals. These are dangerous situations sometimes, & you still understand & respect their right to be anxious & nasty. You are great caretakers of them all. I'm intimidated by their size personally, but I'm so impressed by your spirit of, "I'm responsible for these guys...& all the babies!" Good on you guys! This loss is very hard to reconcile, but your efforts are not a loss!❤

You gave 110% to try to save the little one. Don't beat yourself up. You did your best like you always do. Raising animals is an adventure no matter what they are. We have raised rabbits, chickens, hogs and steers. We've had them do well and had to make decisions when things went wrong. Goes with the territory. You guys are wonderful with your animals. Take care and hope you have better day tomorrow. God bless!

I grew up on a farm in Eastern Ks. One of our neighbors raised bison. My dad would help out at their ranch sometimes. They had a calf that was born sickly and they told my brothers if they could keep it alive, they could keep it. My brothers, being only about 10-13 y/o, stayed in our barn with that calf, through the night. Unfortunately it died early that morning. My sister and I were only about 6-7 years old and I think we were as heartbroken as my brothers were.

You are a man/family of deep feeling and we thank you for allowing us to experience even some of your toughest moments. To see the tears stinging your eyes after the good counsel you sought and the effort and danger you risked shows who you are. Question for you: I realize that they are naturally wild by nature, but they clearly have feelings, deep instinct and intelligence. Can you calm them at all with human speech? I am a city girl, but look forward to being much closer to animals in the future and love learning about them. I believe in God’s original edict that we were meant to be animals’ caretakers under very different conditions, tho he made some wild and some domestic. 😊 You have managed to harness a wild animal as stock. Amazing.

This was one of your best videos yet. So organic. So gritty So real. You did what you had to do. No "normal" farmer would have left that calf in the field. It was fascinating to see the reaction of the bison - not only the momma - when you first drove up. It's a credit to your farming style to see that certain wild instincts have not left them. Also, you mentioned and demonstrated pretty much throughout the video the urgency of the situation in terms of time - how quickly certain steps had to be taken to try and rescue the calf. I wonder if there is such a thing as having the colostrum stored on site , especially during calving season - in case such a situation were to occur again. I understand this is the exception but still - is that something that is done? Stay strong - things will get better! We appreciate that you allow us into your Bison farming life and look forward to more wonderful videos!

But I do have domesticated animals. I know ow the pain of losing an animal. My heart goes out to you and Marissa. That other couple will also never forget their visit to your ranch. They knew instinctively that had you been at their place with the same situation with one of their animals, you would have jumped in to help also. Your care for the bison is what led me to subscribe. I’ve been watching for a while now and when I tuned in today, I certainly wasn’t expecting this wild ride! Edge of my seat right up to the last! You have a new sub, not for the unexpected excitement , but for the compassion, urgency and immediacy with which you all stepped up to the plate and did what you knew had to be done to save this newborn’s life. Red dog, calf, baby, whatever they are called, a new life had greeted this world, but it didn’t greet it back, and y’all fought against the odds to keep him here. The hurt is deep, I know, you pulled out all the stops. But this life wasn’t meant for this little bull. Bury him in a special place. Give him a name. Make him the mascot for your ranch. Let that be the positive for this negative

There are times of plenty, and there are times where there is a lot of loss. It sucks when it goes wrong, but you learn and grow, and come to appreciate the good times more. Thanks for sharing the hard along with the joy.

I have just recently found your videos and have become a subscriber. I can tell, and not just through this video but others as well, what a man of compassion and integrity you are. I was so hoping for the best for this little animal and was heart broken with the outcome, but you did everything you could do. Your love for what you do, for your family and friends, and the animals that you have there is so evident. It is so nice to see the real life workings on the bison farm, the good and the bad. Thank you. We will continue to celebrate and cry with you, and hope for all the best in what you are doing. 🇨🇦

So sorry you guys had such a day. What a blessing that you had those folks visiting. They really came thru. As for you and Marissa......you two were calm, focused. And full of LOVE❤️ for your bison. Truly an example to all humans who chose to take on the care of an animal. Be out a hamster or bison. You guys are the epitome of commitment and I thank you for sharing this with the world. NAMASTE

Seeing this is absolutely amazing!! So very sorry for the loss of a beautiful calf. Y'all did everything you could do. You are so dedicated to your herd. It's obvious how much they mean to you. I only recently came across your site, but, now watch as much as possible. As heart breaking this was, there had to be a reason. Like you said Mom was young and the heat is so hard on these animals. Bless y'all and the work you do with these majestic animals!! Love the videos!!

Dusty is a very good & solid man, with the true patience of Job. He deserves all of the best success, in his ranching endeavors, ALWAYS. Even if things go sideways , or dont go as hoped, he learns from these things & turns around & shares it ALL with us, as a learning & teaching experience. Even if it is a painful experience, or a loss. Thank you Dusty , for sharing all of these years with us.

@@joywebster2678 Even if he had the training to give IV fluids, it is not possible in this situation due to the understandable aggression of the moms.

i have had the same thoughts about carrying an emergency kit & supplies.along with you. i was a visiting nurse and carried IV medicnes in a cooler in the car as i made my rounds of home visits. IDK how that would work with colostrum, Does it come in a dried form, or. concentrate that is ‘shelf stable”? Even just having IV fluid to hydrate a calf, could make a difference when time is.of the essence. I marvel at the mysterious force of Providence that brought you,Marissa and your friends together in 2 vehicles @ the place and time to rescue the the little Red Dog . I am so sorry that baby did not survive. perhaps there was something else wrong with the baby, in addition to the heat, that it couldn’t stand up to get the vital colostrum. perhaps a birth injury, or prolonged diffcult labor? It has been a special learning experience us watching. Dusty, you have had a such a difficult summer. it would seem that you have been “in training” to acquire advanced skills, “Doctoring” the Wild Bison. Maybe you are being “called” to to go forward to become a Veterinarian. You could practice into you elder years, teaching and directing the younger generations of Bison ranchers. A lofty calling, to be sure, but you would make an excellent Vet.❤

@@marilynbridges8697 sub cutaneous as I specified is just sliding it into the skin and running the fluids from an iv bag. The fluids get absorbed through the tissue vs needing a vein, that's why I suggested it. I'm in no way suggesting one starts an IV in the middle of raging bison. It's stick and flow, a litre goes in and stops dehydration. While en route to getting colostrum in the mouth. Sigh but, believe what you want.
@marylong4333

Yes I hydration. Stick it in just under skin back of neck it will make a fluid bump and get absorbed . Now horse people they have a time frame list of certain things that need to happen in a certain amount of time. Afterbirth leaving the mom, baby standing on it's legs in a certain time frame, baby finding and latching on and actually getting suction etc is there maybe talking to the doc you could come up with a bison time frame checklist of certain things to help you
