We have a similar education system in India. To get into professional courses like engineering, medical and others, students have to crack the most difficult exams and they start preparing at the age of 15-16. Instead of 'cram schools' we have 'coaching centres' here for these exams. Students spend hours and hours there after school. The societal pressure and mental stress is too immense that students are left with no option to get out of it. It gets really hard here.
@twist777hz9 сағат бұрын
Just curious, in India the competition is mainly to get into top universities? What about getting into a top middle school or high school?
@jenn_18539 сағат бұрын
@twist777hz In india we usually don't use the terms 'high school' or 'middle school'. We have classes here. Starting fom nursery class (for 3 year olds) to lower kindergarten to upper kindergarten and from there the students are enrolled in 1st standard. From 1st class to 5th class students are usually enrolled in the same school. From there we have secondary (Class 6-10) and then higher/senior secondary classes (Class 11th and 12th). Students generally persue them in the same school from where they've completed 5th class, meaning they are promoted to the next class every year after passing exams. So, no competition in that. However, in 10th class we have to pass a national or state board exam to get our choice of courses/streams (arts, commerce or science) in 11th standard because of the minimum scores required to get enrolled. And so, we don't usually have to compete to get a top 'middle/high' school but we do have to work really hard to score the required percentage/CGPA in order to get enrolled in our desired course/stream.

When in high school my mother told me “if you are bored you are not studying enough” I’m in medical school and scared for life; I barely made it and today I question my worth every single day.

My mom called me a failure last year for failing an entrance exam. I prepared this year at home by self study and online resources, got selected just to take the course and college of my dad's choice. Idk how I am going to survive in future. Well, good luck to you.

Hey , I hope situations are better now. Please know that your credentials and academic success does NOT define your worth. Do not feel insecure because of society's standards. You are worth a lot , you are literally priceless. There's only one of you in this world filled with billions of people. You are much more than just studies and grades. Stay strong and never let anything define your worth ! The only person who can define your worth is YOU! much love ❤

It’s a good episode to show the real situation that Asian students are facing for decades. I especially love the part this show probes into the historical background and societal reasons behind Asian educational issues.
This entire system is thoroughly insane. Mass-prodding young students to compete against each other, to work throughout the day, year after year, primary school into secondary school and into college. And then what? Chances for bling and high status: big house, nice job, all the rest? But more and more there is no reward behind the final curtain. What an absolute fraud.
Really liked the Taiwan elements in this film and enjoyed Janet’s narration so much. The animations designed were so adorable and went well with the concept conveyed. Sincerely proud that this production is made by an outstanding Taiwanese-led team!
In India too, its called "classes" instead of cram school in which students have to attend basically the same cram school thing daily besides sunday after school hours, but here some of us very lucky to have great teachers who make the whole session fun and interactive everyday, and if teachers have completed the goal of the day, they might use the rest of the time with kids having a fun time!

How do entire countries not understand that an education system like this doesn’t produce leaders, thinkers, scholars, or even especially successful people? It is a paradigmatic example of social control. Education is the method, not the goal.
@yayawu83013 күн бұрын
For some students, their success is getting into a good school, and becoming a truly successful person is unrealistic. Many people think that successful people either have a lot of money or good opportunities, and 99% of people will not get such opportunities. Many students don't even know why they want to study, they just follow the crowd because of comparison and don't want to fall behind. We don't care whether we succeed or not, because that is impossible for us. It is better to study, get into a good university, and find a good job. I’m using translator so it might be not accurate
@matthewcaldwell810012 күн бұрын
@ Yeah, taking a lack of social mobility for granted is an aspect of the problem. It doesn’t justify this remarkably ineffective system.
@smaugthemagnificent4 күн бұрын
Like Socrates said: "Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel". It was true over 2000 years ago and it is still true today. Despite all these high "scores", it is worth noting that these countries do not necessarily outperform others.
@cilantroisbetterthanparsley11 сағат бұрын
And you think the US "education" system is the one, then?
@matthewcaldwell810010 сағат бұрын
@ No, you simpleton. You can criticize one thing without immediately praising its popular alternative. American education is terrible because it can’t even take it seriously as a public good. Recourse to such binary thinking is evidence of a poor education in itself.

Love the way video was presented! Feel the same when students said they actually enjoyed days in cram school. Teachers in school were not always as good as in cram schools, especially in their style of teaching and leadership skills...

Interesting video! It shows why most of Asian countries have the cram school culture, how it influence our life and what we try to do recently to have more various education for our next generation. 👍
If you just study the subjects that will be tested only, you have no ways of figuring out what you really like and want to do in life. I encourage you relax and find out what you really want to do.
I have so many memories from this, i went to cram classes almost everyday, especially when i was studying for high school.😭

As a Russian, I can say that an average Russian school gives a very poor education. And there is a huge gap in knowledge that school gives and knowledge that universities require to enter them. So if you still want to enter any university, you need to go to a cram school or to hire a lot of tutors to get an appropriate level of knowledge.

I had to go through entrance exams after 2nd grade, for 5th grade, for 11th grade and lastly university entrance exam. the entrance exam for 3rd grade was the hardest for me. i can't forget the trauma. That exam eventually made my parents seek for illegal measures to get me into reputed school even if it takes to change my name, my identity. I'm living with that name right now . 3rd grade entrance exam made me feel like i'm never enough

I'm a little envious of the Asian students. At least for them, going to a good university actually gives them a chance for a good job. In my country, you can get a good education, spend a lot of money on private teachers, graduate from a top university, and still lose out in recruitment to someone who simply has connections.

in India its same too. India is also a part pf Asia and we all also have to grind our ass off for good government colleges. we have exams like jee and Neet . students have the pressure to perform better in their high school and secondary high school to get a better college or university. then we have to maintain good attendance and cgpa too to get a well-paying and deserving job
What I want to say is that having a good grade doesn't 100% make you are a better person, and getting bad academics doesn't 100% mean you are bad (You can read it if you have time👇) I am from HK, and I do go to cram school but since our private school finishes at 12:30, I don't go tutoring that late. For most students here, they don't have cram schools at night either. I just finished my exams, this one determined what kind of high school I will go to. I actually didn't study hard, I started studying 1day before it started, I might update my grades after they give us.
It is a really good program to know more about Taiwan even our neighbor countries!!😍
